Traits

Tunneller. The young ormdage can burrow through solid ice at its full burrow speed and leaves a 7-foot diameter tunnel in its wake.

Heightened Senses. The young ormdage is completely deaf and mostly blind and relies on vibrations to sense prey on the surface as it tunnels below the ice. While its eyesight is poor, ranging about 40 feet, it can see in shades of gray but cannot distinguish between inanimate objects and creatures, if the creatures are not moving. It senses movements through small whiskers on its body that pick up vibrations up to 300 feet away. The young ormdage also has a keen sense of smell and can detect odors up to 500 feet away.

Monstrous Frenzy. If the young ormdage drops below half its maximum hit points it can go into a frenzy, granting it one additional attack with its tail per turn, if the first attack with its tail did not hit.

Reckless Fury 1/Day. The young ormdage can choose to attack recklessly once it has begun its Monstrous Frenzy, gaining advantage on attack rolls 1 minute, or until it is incapacitated, but attacks made against it also gain advantage for the duration.

Actions

Multiattack. The Young Ormdage makes two melee attacks: one with its bite and one with its tail.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., 1 target. Hit: 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage + 7 (2d6) cold damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., 1 target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 7) bludgeoning damage. If the target is large or smaller, it is grappled on a hit, DC17 strength to escape. The young ormdage cannot make another tail attack on a target if it is grappling a creature.

Cold Breath (recharge 5-6). The young ormdage exhales an icy blast to freeze its prey, in a 30-foot cone. Each creature within range must make a DC14 constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) cold damage on a failed save, and their movement speed is reduced to 0 for one round, or half as much damage on a successful save, and their movement speed is halved.

Chilling Scream 3/Day. The young ormdage emits a piercing scream and any creature within 60 feet of it must succeed on a DC15 wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute, also taking 11 (2d10) psychic damage, or half as much on a successful save. A creature effected by Chilling Scream may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns to attempt to end the frightened condition.

Bonus Actions

Ensnared Bite. If the young ormdage has a creature grappled in its tail, it can use its bonus action to bite that creature, DC14 dexterity saving throw to avoid the ensnared bite. On a failure the target takes 18 (2d10 + 7) piercing damage + 7 (2d6) cold damage. On a success, the target takes no damage and can use its reaction to attempt to free itself from the grapple, DC17 strength.

Description

The tundra winds blow hard across the surface and the temperatures are deadly. A group of hunters stop under a boulder to seek shelter from the bitter winds and light a fire to warm their bodies. As they sit around the fire sharing what rations they have available, a terrible creaking is heard, audible over the howling winds and the icy ground begins to swell, cracking and breaking. A massive creature springs forth, with a huge mouth, filled with several jagged rows of teeth. It slithers out of the hole it made; its body long and scaled, tapering into a long whip like tail with no hindlegs, and two stout arms that end in bladed cusps. It rears its head around, its black beady eyes staring into nothingness, and sniffs. It opens its mouth and emits a horrible scream, piercing the ears and minds of the hunters, who fall to their knees before they can grab their bows.

The ormdage are serpentine monstrosities and are covered in thick, hard scales, with a massive head and an even more impressive mouth. Their bodies taper into a long slender tail. They have no legs, but have two stout, powerful arms that form bladed shovels at their ends for tunnelling under thick ice. Their eyes are small and are mostly blind. Ormdage are typically a gray in color with dull white highlights with a hint of blue and are difficult to discern from their snowy favored terrain. They are deaf and rely on the thousands of tiny whiskers on their body to pick up vibrations on the surface.

Ormdage live in snowy and icy tundra terrain, tunneling under the ice. They only emerge above ground when they have sensed prey above and need to feed. They can go months, and even years, without eating or drinking, often sleeping in underground ice caverns they have formed themselves by digging and tunnelling. Ormdage are solitary creatures and only interact with others of its kind when it is time to procreate, which occurs about once every ten years or so. When breeding season for ormdage occurs, hundreds of the creatures migrate to one central place and will spend several months mating. When a female ormdage lays its eggs, she will nest in place during the gestation process, which can take up to two years to complete.

Lair and Lair Actions

Ormdage make their lairs in ice caverns they have formed themselves by digging and tunnelling. Their lairs are typically connected by a network of underground ice tunnels the ormdage has formed over centuries of tunnelling. Within these lairs, refuse of an ormdage's prey can be found in select piles where it has defecated the parts of the creature that cannot be digested into beneficial nutrients. Depending on the location of the specific ormdage, these piles of refuse can sometimes contain weapons, armor, wood, metals and, most commonly, bones.
