If a creature fails the save by more than 5, they are also knocked prone.

Raging Feedback. When the Goryō is damaged by more than 20 hit points from a single creature on it's turn, it can use it's reaction to make a roaring flame attack.

Legendary Actions

The Goryō can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Goryō regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Teleport (Costs 1 Actions). The Goryō magically teleports, along with any equipment it is wearing or carrying, up to 40 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.

Roaring Flame (Costs 2 Actions). The Goryō makes a Roaring Flame attack.

Outcry of Agony (Costs 3 Actions). The Goryō bellows out in pain, inflicting it's anger upon all who hear it. All creatures within 60 feet of the Goryō must make DC 17 Constitution Saving Throw, taking 13 (3d8) psychic damage on a failed save. Creatures that fail the save scream in pain and are also considered incapacitated, but can attempt to make a DC 15 Wisdom Saving Throw at the start of their turn, becoming no longer incapacitated on a successful save. Other creatures can also attempt to make a DC 15 Wisdom (Medicine) check to recover the creature as a bonus action.

Description

Goryōs are the spirits of nobles who died political conflict, and have cursed the living with their last breath, and were given the chance to act upon that vow with their revival. Goryōs are corporeal beings wearing fine clothes showing the high status they had in life, along with a large skull for a head, seemingly triple the size of their skull when they were alive. Their limbs are silky, white, ghostly arms and legs and their body flaming with colour dependant on their emotion, the base colour being blue.

Royal Past. Goryōs are former nobles who have dark and selfish intent, who wished for personal gain when they lived, and chaos and destruction upon their death. Goryōs are cunning and cruel in order to achieve chaos, and have the tools needed to do so, they spend all of their hours hiding in the cellars of their former homes plotting revenge, occasionally causing minor chaos to keep themselves occupied.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Goryō's lair is the kingdom that it lived in, and it's power over it's lair is proportionate to the power it had in life, with three levels of power a Goryō can have.

Power Alpha (+2 CR): Monarch, Dictator, High Mage, Pharaoh, etc

Power Beta (+1 CR): Monarch Successor, Duke/Duchess, Council Member, Elder, etc

Power Omega: Mayor, Lord/Lady, General, Pirate Captain, etc

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Goryō takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Goryō can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Animate Inanimate (Alpha). The Goryō animates 1d4 inanimate objects that are within 30 feet of it and it had touched within it's life, if objects affected by this effect remain, the Goryō cannot use this action on it's turn.
  • Alter Terrain (Beta and Higher). The Goryō can alter terrain or structure within it's lair in one of the following ways:
  • A real or illusory (Goryō's choice) wall, floor or ceiling appears that can be up to 15 feet x 15 feet.
  • 25 cubed feet of terrain or structure moves, rotates, vibrates, warps or folds at a rate of 5 feet per second for the next 6 or less seconds (Goryō's choice)
  • The Goryō can take the 'use an object' action on an object within 150 feet of it.
  • Portal (Omega and Higher). A 4 feet by 6 feet portal appears leading from one surface in the lair to another.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary Goryō’s lair is cursed, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Grim Omens. Omens foretelling horrible tragedies occur frequently within a mile of the lair, such as bloody rain (Alpha), lightning striking in clear sky (Beta and Higher) and random swarms of bugs (Omega and Higher).
  • Mysterious Deaths. People die of mysterious and unfortunate causes, such as suddenly rupturing after drinking alcohol (Alpha), unexplained heart attacks (Beta and Higher) and slipping on tar or oil (Omega and Higher)

If the Goryō dies, these effects end immediately.
