Description

Unlike the mimics from the Mainlands, Aabcellean Mimics appear purely mechanical and strikingly different from other chests in Aabcellean ruins. These machinations are said to appear like some sort of "inside-out locking mechanism," a reflection of their puzzle-based structure. They are so named since they serve a similar purpose to mimics: to guard the treasure they hold within.

Aabcellean Mimics do not attack outright unless provoked. Though, they do inflict a curse upon trespassers when they enter their lair. The curse is small at first, but gradually grows more and more debilitating as time goes on, and persist even if the adventurers leave the premises. The curse cannot be removed unless the mimic is either opened or destroyed, in which the curse is lifted immediately. Destroying the mimic damages the treasure within it.

To open the mimic, find the key pieces hidden within the ruins. A ruin can hold anywhere between 2-5 key pieces. Putting the pieces together and bringing the key to the mimic will unlock it, lifting its curse and revealing its contents. Or, carefully searching Aabcellean ruins and caravans might reveal a master key to unlock a mimic in a specific temple.

Lair and Lair Actions

Aabcellean Mimics reside in the ruins of Aabcellean Temples, which those nomadic peoples used as points to move between. Each ruin only has one such mimic.

Upon entering an Aabcellean Temple, the following effects are applied to you and your party:

Curse of Whittling: A curse that starts off weak and barely noticeable, but gets worse every 2 hours, with 5 stages of effects. It persists even if you leave the ruins. It and its effects can only be lifted by unlocking or destroying the mimic that placed it upon you.

Stage 1: All Abilities reduced by 1. Gain 1 level of exhaustion.
Stage 2: Poisoned and gain 1 level of exhaustion.
Stage 3: Proficiencies lost and gain 1 level of exhaustion.
Stage 4: Bonus Actions become regular Actions, Reactions disabled, and gain 1 level of exhaustion.
Stage 5: Gain 2 levels of exhaustion.
