Description
Yunstreiters come to be when the magic a necromancer crafts in life births a curse, barring them from the afterlife. A newly spawned Yunstreiter has all the memories of the past mage, but these memories slowly fade when the Yunstreiter is in its incorporeal form. Possessing corpses of the dead is the only means to pause this process. This drives a Yunstreiter to keep many zombies under its possession, ensuring it rarely spends more than a moment outside of an animated corpse. A Yunstreiter loses all memories of its former life after 7 days in its incorporeal form.
If a Yunstreiter inhabits the corpse of a humanoid it killed, the Yunstreiter acquires all the memories of that humanoid. Yunstreiters are often driven mad as these memories mix with memories of the original mage. Fueled by rage, Yunstreiters afflicted in this way then begin attacking enemies learned from the newly acquired memories. In rare cases, this creates a snowball effect where each newly slain "enemy" brings memories of new enemies, often within the same area. Some communities combat this effect with gift giving festivals designed to maintain harmony. Locals harboring grudges against one another are encouraged to speak freely at such events in hopes of relieving any tensions a Yunstreiter could seize upon.
