False Appearance. The Vine Trap, while underground and motionless, appears as an area (10ft square) of normal ground with some vines on it. A DC 16 perception check (or passive perception) gives a feeling that something is off about these vines, but gives no insight into their true nature.
Underground. The Vine Trap can take ten minutes to bury itself underground. While underground it has total cover from attacks on the surface but cannot attack. While underground, it benefits from its false appearance trait, but cannot move.
Regeneration. At the start of each of its turns, the Vine Trap regains 13 (2d8 + 4) hit points.
Multiattack. The Vine Trap can make four attacks on its turn, but only one of them can be engulf.
Vine. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 30 ft., 1 target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage and the target is grappled.
Reel. The Vine Trap pulls a creature grappled by it up to the 30ft closer as it extracts one of its vines.
Emerge. The Vine Trap emerges from being underground. Any creature on top of its location is knocked prone, and takes 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage. The Vine Trap can then use multiattack.
Engulf. The Vine Trap engulfs one creature within 5ft of it. That creature must make a DC 16 strength save or be engulfed. On a success it is still grappled, but not engulfed. A creature that fails this save is engulfed. An engulfed creature takes 13 (2d8 + 4) acid damage as it is engulfed, and then takes this damage again at the start of each of its turns. A engulfed creature is blinded, grappled, and restrained, but can breathe. The only way to remove an engulfed creature from the Vine Trap is to kill the Vine Trap. Once the Vine Trap is killed, anyone inside of it can use an action to climb out. To escape before the Vine Trap is killed, the Vine Trap must first take at least 45 damage before its turn. Then, the creature can attempt to claim out by making either a DC 16 strength or dexterity check. On a failed attempt, the DC increases by 2 for all future attempts (16 to 18, then 18 to 20, and so on).
Description
Found in dense jungles and forests, the deadly vine trap preys on wildlife and adventures alike. Vine Traps bury themselves underground, but erupt when prey walks by. they use their vines to reel in prey before engulfing and devouring it. Vine Traps appear as gigantic masses of vines, from which various tendrils come out and attack anyone who gets too close. By all accounts, the vine trap is to be avoided at all costs.
