Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Leviathan fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Amphibious. The Leviathan can breathe both air and water.
Tidal Mastery. The Leviathan can manipulate water currents in its environment, causing violent waves. Once per turn as a bonus action, the Leviathan can create strong underwater currents, forcing all creatures within 60 feet to succeed on a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be pushed 30 feet away.
Abyssal Presence. The Leviathan exudes a deep, chilling presence. Each creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the Leviathan must succeed on a DC 26 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Multiattack. The Leviathan can use its Abyssal Roar. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its tail.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 48 (7d10 + 10) piercing damage.
Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 25 ft., one target. Hit: 44 (6d10 + 10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Abyssal Roar. The Leviathan emits a bone-chilling roar. Each creature within 120 feet that can hear it must succeed on a DC 26 Constitution saving throw or take 54 (12d8) psychic damage and become stunned until the end of their next turn. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and is not stunned.
Crushing Depths. The Leviathan generates a crushing sphere of pressurized water in a 60-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature in the area must make a DC 26 Constitution saving throw, taking 88 (16d10) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.
Inferno Breath (Recharge 5–6). The Leviathan releases a burst of fiery breath in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw, taking 91 (14d12) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one.
Tidal Surge (Recharge 5–6).
The Leviathan summons a surge of water to propel itself forward or manipulate the battlefield.
Effect: The Leviathan can move up to half its swim speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Any creatures within 10 feet of its path must make a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be knocked back 20 feet and take 18 (4d8) bludgeoning damage.
Boiling Frenzy.
The Leviathan channels its abyssal rage, empowering its next attack.
Effect: The Leviathan gains advantage on its next melee attack, and if the attack hits, it deals an additional 22 (4d10) fire damage.
Inferno Dash.
The Leviathan’s body briefly ignites in flames, allowing it to reposition quickly.
Effect: The Leviathan can move up to its full speed in any direction, leaving behind a trail of molten water. Creatures that start their turn in or move through the trail must succeed on a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or take 21 (6d6) fire damage.
Recoil Dive.
The Leviathan recoils into the water or air, repositioning itself defensively.
Effect: The Leviathan can take the Dodge action or dive into the water (if applicable), gaining resistance to all damage until the start of its next turn.
These bonus actions provide the Abyssal Leviathan with tactical flexibility, allowing it to deal more damage, move rapidly, or protect itself, enhancing its threat and making it a challenging opponent for high-level parties.
Tidal Rebound.
When a creature within 30 feet of the Leviathan hits it with an attack, the Leviathan can retaliate by summoning a burst of water.
Effect: The attacker must make a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be pushed back 20 feet and knocked prone. On a successful save, the attacker is only pushed back 10 feet.
Abyssal Counter.
When a creature misses the Leviathan with a melee attack, the Leviathan can make a tail attack against that creature.
Effect: The Leviathan makes one tail attack against the attacker.
Inferno Backlash.
When the Leviathan takes fire damage from a spell or ability, it can erupt in flames in response.
Effect: All creatures within 20 feet of the Leviathan must make a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or take 36 (8d8) fire damage, or half as much damage on a successful save.
These reactions ensure that the Leviathan remains a formidable and dynamic presence on the battlefield, punishing attackers and manipulating its environment to devastating effect.
The Leviathan can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Leviathan regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
- Tail Attack. The Leviathan makes a tail attack.
- Tidal Surge (Costs 2 Actions). The Leviathan causes a powerful surge of water. Each creature within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be knocked back 20 feet and take 22 (4d10) bludgeoning damage.
- Volcanic Pulse (Costs 3 Actions). The Leviathan causes molten lava vents to erupt from the ocean floor, creating pools of magma. Each creature within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or take 44 (8d10) fire damage and be restrained by molten rock. The restrained creature can attempt a DC 26 Strength check to free itself on each of its turns.
Description
The Abyssal Leviathan is a colossal, ancient sea serpent of unimaginable power, born from the darkest depths of the ocean and infused with the primordial forces of fire and water. It is a fearsome embodiment of both the crushing pressure of the abyss and the searing heat of molten magma, blending the two elements into a singular, destructive force.
General Characteristics
-
Size and Appearance:
The Abyssal Leviathan is gargantuan in size, with a body stretching hundreds of feet long. Its serpentine form is covered in thick, dark scales that shimmer with a faint, volcanic glow. Massive fins run along its spine, resembling jagged obsidian blades. Its eyes glow like twin suns, burning with an inner fury that reflects its connection to the fiery depths. Its maw is lined with rows of sharp, obsidian-like teeth capable of tearing through ships with ease. -
Elemental Power:
The Leviathan is a being of pure elemental chaos, commanding both the destructive forces of the ocean and volcanic fire. While it primarily rules the deep seas, it has the ability to conjure and manipulate fire, making it as dangerous in volcanic or coastal environments as it is in the abyssal depths. Its presence alone heats the surrounding waters to boiling, turning the environment into a living hazard. -
Intelligence and Cunning:
Despite its monstrous appearance, the Abyssal Leviathan is an intelligent and ancient creature. It has survived for millennia by outsmarting and overpowering even the most formidable foes. It uses its knowledge of the ocean's darkest secrets to lay ambushes, manipulate its environment, and even communicate with those foolish enough to attempt diplomacy. However, its mind is as volatile as the elements it controls—prone to violent outbursts and destructive rage. -
Dominion Over the Abyss:
As a ruler of the deep ocean, the Leviathan commands all lesser sea creatures in its territory. It is feared by even the most dangerous predators of the deep, such as krakens and other sea serpents. Its control over water and fire is absolute, allowing it to manipulate tides, summon boiling currents, and create massive eruptions of magma both in and out of water. -
Destructive Nature:
The Leviathan is not just a predator; it is a force of pure destruction. It is driven by an ancient, malevolent instinct to dominate and obliterate everything in its path. It sinks ships, shatters coastal cities with tidal waves, and leaves devastation in its wake. The Leviathan’s very presence is a herald of natural disasters, with storms, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions following wherever it goes. -
Immense Physical Strength:
The Leviathan’s immense size and power make it nearly unstoppable in combat. Its bite can crush ships and shatter stone, while its massive tail can create shockwaves underwater, disorienting and damaging even the most well-prepared adventurers. Its scales are nearly impenetrable, making it a fearsome foe to face in direct combat. -
Elemental Mastery:
The Leviathan’s control over both water and fire is unparalleled. It can summon tidal waves, boiling water, and volcanic eruptions with a mere thought. In battle, it breathes jets of flame, incinerating everything in its path, while using the surrounding water as both a shield and a weapon.
Behavior
-
Territorial and Ruthless:
The Abyssal Leviathan is fiercely territorial, considering the deepest oceans and volcanic rifts as its domain. Any creature or ship that enters its territory is seen as prey or a threat. It strikes without mercy, often launching devastating surprise attacks. -
Apathetic to Life:
It views lesser creatures—both land-dwellers and ocean life—as insignificant and disposable. Its motivations are primal, driven by a hunger for destruction and domination, and it takes pleasure in annihilating entire fleets or coastal civilizations without any regard for the life it extinguishes. -
Ancient and Eternal:
The Leviathan has existed for untold eons, far older than most civilizations. Its long life has only deepened its sense of superiority and disdain for mortals. It sees itself as a timeless force, impossible to defeat or control.
In summary, the Abyssal Leviathan is a terrifying combination of elemental fury, immense physical power, and ancient intelligence. It is a living cataclysm, feared by all who dwell near the sea and a nearly unstoppable force of destruction.
Lair and Lair Actions
-
Volcanic Rift:
The central feature of the lair is a massive, jagged trench in the ocean floor. Lava flows constantly seep from cracks in the earth, illuminating the dark abyss with an eerie, reddish glow. These lava rivers snake across the lair, heating the surrounding water to dangerous levels. The Leviathan uses these as natural hazards, controlling the terrain with bursts of molten rock. -
Boiling Seawater:
The water near the lair is unnaturally hot, constantly bubbling and churning as it comes into contact with the volcanic activity below. This area is inhospitable to most forms of life. Creatures that venture too close to the boiling pools of magma or linger near vents take fire damage, as the water itself becomes a scalding weapon. -
Steam Fissures:
Powerful vents of steam shoot from cracks in the ocean floor, creating dangerous clouds of boiling vapor. These clouds obscure vision and make it difficult to traverse the area without harm. The Leviathan is completely unaffected by this environmental hazard and uses it to ambush or disorient enemies. -
Collapsed Ruins:
Scattered around the lair are remnants of ancient, sunken civilizations—half-buried statues, crumbling temples, and fragments of ships from previous ages. The Leviathan has collected treasures from wrecks and destroyed vessels, some of which lie guarded beneath massive stones. These ruins serve as hiding places for the Leviathan to ambush intruders. -
Molten Pits and Lava Geysers:
Throughout the lair, large pits filled with magma bubble up from the rift, occasionally erupting with explosive force. These geysers can blast fiery streams of molten rock, dealing heavy fire damage to anything caught in their path. The Leviathan can trigger these eruptions to manipulate the battlefield. -
Constant Darkness:
Far from the surface, the lair is bathed in a near-perpetual darkness, save for the occasional glow of molten lava and volcanic eruptions. The crushing pressure of the deep ocean combined with the heat creates an oppressive atmosphere. Only those with darkvision can see anything in the abyss, and even then, the harsh glow of the lava makes everything flicker and twist like a living nightmare.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Leviathan can take a lair action to cause one of the following effects:
-
Boiling Surge: Superheated water surges up, causing all creatures within 120 feet of the Leviathan to take 21 (6d6) fire damage and be pushed 20 feet away.
-
Tidal Whirlpool: A powerful whirlpool forms, pulling creatures towards the Leviathan. Each creature within 90 feet must make a DC 26 Strength saving throw or be pulled 30 feet closer and restrained by the swirling currents.
-
Volcanic Eruption: Lava plumes burst from the sea floor, creating fiery hazards. Each creature within 60 feet of a chosen point must make a DC 26 Dexterity saving throw or take 39 (6d12) fire damage and be knocked prone.
Regional Effects
The Leviathan’s presence creates the following magical effects in a 6-mile radius:
- Boiling Seas. The waters surrounding the Leviathan constantly bubble and boil, causing ships to struggle through the superheated waves and dealing 14 (4d6) fire damage to any creature submerged in the water.
- Fissures and Tremors. Minor earthquakes and cracks in the sea floor occur regularly, releasing bursts of steam and sulfur, lightly obscuring the area.
- Stormy Weather. The atmosphere around the Leviathan is constantly turbulent, with dark clouds, lightning strikes, and intense rainfall.
