Traits

Adaptable Parasite. The Riftlings have Freedom of Movement across any terrain.

Mindless Horde. The Riftling is Immune to being Charmed, Frightened, Stunned, or otherwise befuddled.

Parasitic Implant. If the Riftling has managed to Infect a victim, that victim will suffer a serious of ill effects. They will immediately take one level of Exhaustion. This will last until the Riftling Egg is removed from their body.

If the Egg has not been removed within the hour, the victim must lower their max HP by 2d10. If the Egg hasn't been removed within a day, the victim is incapacitated.

The evening following incapacitation, the victim dies, and a new cocoon begins to form around their corpse.

The Egg is barbed and tightly clings to surrounding tissue; removing it will require a DC 18 Medicine check, and every attempt will count for 2d6 Slashing Damage. The Egg & Riftling are weak to Radiant damage however; if the victim is put through this damage type, the Egg will flee the body automatically, still causing the 2d6 of Slashing Damage.

Actions

Latch & Drag. The Riftling grapples the target. If it has more Riftlings with it, the restrained save becomes more difficult. 1-2 Riftling = DC 8 STR Save. 3-5 Riftling = DC 10. 5-7 Riftling = DC 14. 8+ Riftling = DC 15.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit: (1d4 + 2) [Piercing] damage. On a hit, the target must pass a DC 10 CON Save or be Infected. If the target is Stunned or Restrained when bitten, they have Disadvantage on the Save.

If the target fails the save, they will roll a flat D20: 1-5, the egg is in their neck/head area. 6-10, It is in the Torso. 11-15, the egg is implanted in a limb. 16-20, the egg barely makes it through the surface of the skin, and can be easily removed by hand.

Stunning Spray. RangedWeapon Attack: +2 to hit, range 10/25 ft., 1 target. Hit:  (1d4 + 2) [Acid] damage. On a hit, target must pass a DC 10 CON Save or be Stunned.

Description

These terrifying parasites lurk in the darkest depths of Alfheim in a monstrous cocoon as large as a horse, yet thin as paper, anchored to the ocean floor like a barnacle. The cocoon pulsates faintly, hidden amongst the seabed's rock formations, waiting for an unfortunate creature to disturb it.

When the cocoon is touched, it tears open, releasing hundreds of these horrifying creatures in a frenzied swarm. The parasites take the worst traits of both fish and insect, with grotesque, glassy bug eyes that shimmer in the abyss. Their disproportionately large jaws, lined with razor-sharp teeth, snap violently as they swarm their victim. With their small size, they rely on sheer numbers to overwhelm and restrain any creature unlucky enough to cross their path.

Each parasite sports a double-jawed proboscis, which extends like a living spear to pierce their victim’s skin. With surgical precision, they inject their egg sacs into the body, ensuring that the host will carry the next generation of these alien horrors. Once infected, the victim’s fate is sealed, as the larvae grow rapidly, devouring the host from within before breaking free, continuing the cycle of terror in the deep.

Their mindless, collective drive to feed and breed makes them relentless in their pursuit, and even the briefest encounter can spell doom for any creature in their domain.
