Posted May 14, 2025Just get an exterminator. Cast Cloudkill for goodness sake. Never find yourself in a position like that unfortunate adventurer. That's not a good way to go. Also, I love how this comment section is just "Rats" with one dude laughing.
Oof. Lost 3 hit die, reducing health from 24(7d8-7) to 14(4d8-4). Also gained a climbing speed of 30ft. Also lost Keen Smell, but didn't gain Perception proficiency.
Bite's damage is reduced from 7(2d6) or 3(1d6) if bloodied to 5(2d4) or 2(1d4) if bloodied.
Nerfed a simple swarm of rats. Fusion it is.
Fusion time! Give them back their old health of 24 and their old damage of 2d6 or 1d6 rather than 2d4 or 1d4. Simple.

Posted Jun 15, 2025Should Dissonant Whispers only affect one rat in the Swarm? A DM said that since the spell only affects one mind, it only cause one rat to flea and then die.

Posted Jun 15, 2025RAW, dissonant whispers targets one creature. Swarms are treated as a single creature for most purposes, but they are technically many different individuals, and the official rules do not offer much guidance when it comes to the treatment of swarms, so there is a lot of grey space when it comes to various spells.
Most enchantment spells would not work on a swarm, as they are immune to both the charmed and frightened conditions, but Dissonant Whispers is not tagged as either a charm or fear effect, so it seems like it should work against a swarm. At the same time, that makes no sense thematically, and it really feels like the spell should count as a fear effect. All this to say: I can see where your DM was coming from, but I think a lot of DMs would have ruled it so the spell affects the entire swarm, because that seems more RAI.

Certain creatures get buffs like the Ice Devil (love it) but then the swarm of rats gets a huge L in HP and damage? C'mon man, give my rats some love.
