Traits

Shadow Blend. While in dim light or darkness, the Abyssal Stalker can use a bonus action to become invisible. The invisibility lasts until it attacks, casts a spell, or enters bright light.

Abyssal Hunter. The Abyssal Stalker has advantage on attack rolls against creatures it has surprised or that are frightened.

Keen Senses. The Abyssal Stalker has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell or hearing.

Actions

Multiattack. The Abyssal Stalker makes two attacks: one with its claws and one with its bite.

  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
    Hit: 15 (2d10 + 4) piercing damage.

  • Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
    Hit: 12 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage.

Abyssal Howl (Recharge 5–6). The Abyssal Stalker emits a terrifying howl. Each creature within 30 feet that can hear it must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, a creature is frightened for 1 minute. A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Devour Shadow (Recharge 5–6). The Abyssal Stalker targets one creature within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or take 18 (4d8) necrotic damage, and the Abyssal Stalker regains hit points equal to half the damage dealt.

Description

The Abyssal Stalker is a nightmarish, serpentine creature that slithers in the shadows with a body covered in thick, tar-like scales that seem to drink in the light around it. Its elongated frame moves with unsettling grace, supported by spindly limbs tipped with razor-sharp claws. Its head is angular and almost reptilian, with a grotesque, split jaw lined with needle-like teeth that constantly drip with dark ichor. Pale, lidless eyes glow faintly with a sickly yellow light, and rows of jagged spines run down its back, pulsing faintly as if alive with some inner, corrupt energy. The Abyssal Stalker emits a soft, almost melodic hum, a dissonant tune that claws at the edges of sanity. Its very presence radiates a suffocating aura of dread, and its movement through the darkness is nearly imperceptible—until it is too late.

  • The Abyssal Stalker lurks in dark corners, blending into shadows and striking when the party is isolated.
  • It will use Abyssal Howl to sow panic, then focus on frightened targets for maximum damage.
  • In a protracted fight, it will retreat into the shadows and heal using Devour Shadow before returning to the fray.
