Traits

Molten Form. A creature that touches the Volcanic Elemental or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet takes 10 (3d6) fire damage.

Obscuring Smoke. The elemental constantly emits thick, black smoke in a 10-foot radius around it. This area is heavily obscured, and nonmagical fire within the area is extinguished. Wind disperses the smoke until the elemental's next turn.

Lava Glide. The elemental can move through lava and magma as if it were normal terrain. It can also burrow through solid stone, leaving a trail of molten rock behind that hardens after 1 minute.

Fiery Explosion (Recharge 5-6). When reduced to 0 HP, the elemental explodes in a 20-foot radius. Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 42 (12d6) fire damage and 21 (6d6) bludgeoning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Actions

Multiattack. The Volcanic Elemental makes two Slam attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.Hit: 18 (2d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage plus 9 (2d8) fire damage.

Choking Smoke (Recharge 4-6). The elemental exhales volcanic smoke in a 30-foot cone. Creatures in the area must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) poison damage and 9 (2d8) fire damage and becoming blinded for 1 minute on a failure. A successful save halves the damage and prevents blindness. A blinded creature can make another save at the end of each of its turns to end the condition.

Magma Surge (Recharge 5-6). The elemental slams the ground, sending a wave of molten rock in a 15-foot radius. Each creature on the ground must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) fire damage and being knocked prone on a failure, or half as much on a success. The ground in this area becomes molten rock and is difficult terrain for 1 minute. Creatures who start their turn on the molten rock take 6 (2d6) fire damage.

Legendary Actions

The Volcanic Elemental can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. It can only take one at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. It regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

  • Ashen Step. The elemental teleports up to 30 feet.
  • Molten Strike. The elemental makes one Slam attack.

  • Lava Surge (Costs 2 Actions). The elemental erupts in a burst of molten lava, sending searing magma outward in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) fire damage on a failed save or half as much on a success.

Description

A raging fusion of fire and smoke, the Volcanic Elemental is a living eruption of molten rock, searing flame, and choking ash. Its shifting form pulses with volcanic energy, dispersing into smoke before reforming in explosive bursts. Every step leaves the ground scorched, and its fiery limbs melt stone with each strike. Surrounded by blinding cinders and suffocating heat, this elemental turns the battlefield into a blazing inferno, consuming everything in its path.
