Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Virellius fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Actions

Spellcasting. Virellius is a 20th-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 22, +14 to hit). He has prepared the following spells:

Cantrips (at will): Fire Bolt, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation, Mage Hand, Message

1st (4 slots): Shield, Magic Missile, Detect Magic, Charm Person

2nd (3 slots): Mirror Image, Misty Step, Suggestion

3rd (3 slots): Counterspell, Fireball, Dispel Magic

4th (3 slots): Greater Invisibility, Phantasmal Killer

5th (3 slots): Wall of Force, Dominate Person, Telekinesis

6th (2 slots): Globe of Invulnerability, Mass Suggestion

7th (2 slots): Finger of Death, Forcecage

8th (1 slot): Power Word Stun, Maze

9th (1 slot): Time Stop

1/day: Wish (Vecna-twisted variant)

Vecna's Eye (Recharge 5–6). Virellius targets one creature within 120 feet. That creature must make a DC 22 Intelligence saving throw or take 8d12 psychic damage and be subject to Disintegrate.

Bonus Actions

Equipment:

  • Scepter of the Burnt Muse (Legendary Staff): +2 arcane focus. Stores 10 levels of spells. Can cast Meteor Swarm 1/day with psychic damage.
  • Toga of Woven Secrets (Vecnan Relic): Resistance to non-force damage. Cast Wish once per long rest; always twisted by Vecna.
  • Crown of the Last Ovation (Artifact): Creatures within 30 feet must make DC 17 Wis save or be stunned once per turn when Virellius casts a spell.
  • Script of Living Lies (Tome): Once per turn, force reroll of a d20 used against him. Grants immunity to divination and truth-based magic.
Reactions

Stage of Souls (Lair Action). At initiative count 20 (losing ties), Virellius can choose from the following lair actions:

  • Recreate a traumatic PC memory. Each PC must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom save or be stunned for 1 round.
  • Animate a copy of one PC to fight against the party for 1 minute.
  • Swap one PC with their shadow double (mirror stats, but evil alignment).
Legendary Actions

Legendary Actions (3/Turn)

Virellius can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Virellius regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

💠 Illusion Step (Costs 1 Action)

Virellius teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. A faint trail of ghostly afterimages lingers in his wake until the start of his next turn.

🌀 Twist Reality (Costs 1 Action)

Virellius targets one creature within 60 feet. That creature must reroll an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check it just made and use the new result. This can force a reroll after knowing the outcome of the first roll.

🔥 Flame Ovation (Costs 2 Actions)

Virellius releases a dazzling, burning surge of flame and psychic force in a 20-foot radius centered on himself or a point he can see within 60 feet.
Each creature in the area must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 6d10 fire and psychic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. The flame is ghostly and theatrical—shaped like grasping hands or mocking faces.

Description

🕯️ Virellius, the Immortal Flame

"The curtain will never fall while I yet draw breath… and I no longer need breath."

Once a beloved and tyrannical actor-emperor of a forgotten Netherese empire, Virellius ruled not through military might but through spectacle, lies, and enchantment. Obsessed with his own legacy, he sought immortality not of the flesh, but of reputation. In death, his soul refused to fade—so captivating was his final soliloquy that even Vecna paused to listen. And in that pause, Virellius claimed undeath through sheer ego and showmanship.

Now reborn as an undead avatar of secrecy and illusion, Virellius appears as a skeletal figure wrapped in a Toga of Woven Secrets, embroidered with ever-shifting text and forgotten incantations. His eyes blaze with purple fire, his voice is silk soaked in venom, and he always stands as though on a stage. When he casts spells, whispered laughter and ghostly applause echo unnervingly.

His lair is a nightmare of theatrical symbolism—flickering chandeliers over pits of shadow, cursed props, and stages built from bone and ash. He sees combat as performance, adversaries as reluctant co-stars, and his victory as inevitable.

Though his vanity is theatrical, his cruelty is real. He toys with memories, fractures identity, and manipulates fate with the flair of a playwright. Virellius considers death not a punishment but a closing night—and he never intends for the show to end.

Lair and Lair Actions

🎭 Lair: The Stage of Souls

Location Description:
The lair of Virellius is a warped, ever-shifting grand theatre carved from the memories of the dead and haunted by forgotten performances. Velvet curtains bleed shadow, phantom chandeliers sway without wind, and the air crackles with whispered applause. The stage glows with runes of memory and deception, changing form between each "scene."

The arena's architecture is unnatural: floating balconies, crumbling opera boxes, and trapdoors that open to voids of silence. Everything within this domain seems to respond to his will—costume, color, lighting, and music.

🕯️ Lair Traits (while within the Stage of Souls)

  1. Phantom Stagehands: Illusory figures can interact with physical objects. Once per round, Virellius may manipulate environmental elements (open trapdoors, trigger glyphs, change lighting) as a free action.

  2. Thespian’s Will: Enemies within the lair have disadvantage on saving throws against illusion and enchantment spells cast by Virellius.

  3. Curtain of Silence: Magic that detects thoughts, alignment, or truth automatically fails. The lair resists being "understood"—divination spells fizzle unless cast with a DC 20 Arcana check.

  4. Orator: While out of combat and In acting as master of ceremonies, Virellius always acts first

🩸 Lair Actions (Initiative count 20, losing ties)

At the start of initiative count 20 on each round, Virellius can use one of the following lair actions. He cannot use the same action two rounds in a row.

🎬 1. Rehearsal of Pain

Virellius dredges up a traumatic memory from each PC’s past. Each creature must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn, overwhelmed by echoes of failure, grief, or guilt.

“You remember the moment you let them die… but this time, it’s your fault.”

🎭 2. The Doppelgänger’s Debut

An illusory copy of one random PC materializes on the battlefield (uses the PC’s current stats and equipment but acts with malicious intent). This illusion lasts 1 minute or until reduced to 0 HP.

“Imitation is the cruelest form of flattery.”

🪞 3. Shadow Casting

Virellius targets one PC and replaces them with a version of themselves from a dark, mirror dimension. This Shadow Self has identical stats, but evil alignment and distorted spell effects (radiant becomes necrotic, etc.).

The real PC is banished to the mirror realm for 1 round, reappearing after their shadow form is slain or at the end of the next round (whichever comes first).

“You always were your worst enemy. Tonight, you prove it.”
