Actions

Multiattack. The bogfish makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its spines.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 4) piercing damage.

Spines. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) poison damage.

Bog Spit (Recharge 5–6). The bogfish spits acidic mud in a 40-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 22 (5d8) acid damage, and for one minute, the creature can't take more than one attack or use reactions, and its speed is halved. The creature can make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself with a successful save.

Reactions

A bogfish may take one reaction each turn.

In Motion. The bogfish may spend its reaction to use up to 10 feet of its remaining movement to move without provoking opportunity attacks.

Leap. When the bogfish has moved at least 10 feet this turn, the bogfish may use its movement to leap up to 10 feet in the air without provoking opportunity attacks. When it lands, each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or fall prone.

Mudshield. When the bogfish is hit by an attack, it may use its reaction to gain a +2 bonus to AC until the end of the turn, including against the triggering attack.

Lair and Lair Actions

A Bogfish’s Lair

Bogfish dwell in swamps and moist underground environments, where they make their lairs in half submerged ruins or caverns.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the bogfish takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects:

  • The bogfish chooses a 10-foot-square area on the ground that it can see within 120 feet of it. The ground in that area turns into 3-foot-deep mud. Each creature on the ground in that area when the mud appears must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or sink into the mud and become restrained. A creature can take an action to attempt a DC 15 Strength check, freeing itself or another creature within its reach and ending the restrained condition on a success. Moving 1 foot in the mud costs 2 feet of movement. On initiative count 20 on the next round, the mud hardens, and the Strength DC to work free increases to 20.
  • The bogfish flings mud from its body to blind nearby enemies. Any creature within 5 feet of the bogfish must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or become blinded until the end of their next turn.
