Description
An owlf is an avian carnivore with the muscular body of a dire wolf and the wings, forelegs, and feathers of an owl.
Magically Fused. Owlfs were created when a mated pair of giant owls and dire wolves were caught in a magic storm the fused the two beasts retaining the canine form of the dire wolves that became feathered throughout and giving them wings, talons, and minds of the great birds these four that became two mated and after many seasons became common protectors of elven settlement in northern parts of the world.
Pack Mentality. Though owlfs gained the minds of the giant owls they retained many of the instincts of the wolf becoming very social creatures that live in great dens with a good 20-40 members to a pack depending on how well their environment can sustain them. Along with becoming great protectors of the elves, they protected the environment itself as wolves are prone to do... by pruning the weaker members of the herds that passed through their territory.
War Pets/Mounts. Owlfs will occasionally give newborn cubs to warriors they feel are worthy and have proven themselves to the pack. Trainers familiar with these creatures will typically know they respond best to commands given in Elvish or Sylvan. They typically respond well to training with wolves or other canines until they reach a larger size when they are best trained with other flying mounts.
