Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, Ferol has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
Multiattack. Ferol makes two longsword attacks or two longbow attacks. It can use its Life Drain in place of one longsword attack.
Life Drain. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) necrotic damage. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
A humanoid slain by this attack rises 24 hours later as a zombie under Ferol's control, unless the humanoid is restored to life or its body is destroyed. Ferol can have no more than twelve zombies under its control at one time.
Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) slashing damage, or 7 (1d10 + 2) slashing damage if used with two hands.
Longbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, range 150/600 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage.
A neat character concept. Nice “little lich” at the bottom of a low level dungeon.
it’s interesting to see the simple Wight stat block so well used.
and you don't even have to fight him if you do it right
This is true.
The fight is completely optional.
I've edited him a bit for my campaign. He casts a few spells, has a few more hitpoints and wishes to turn the characters into zombies to help him with his research. They will def. be killing him.
oh my GOOASH!
Wait...its a just a wight?
I like that idea.
In my campaign I've given him High Elf racial traits - advantage against being charmed, and a wizard cantrip (Toll the Dead) cast at 2nd level. He also has an Acheron Blade so he can't be turned, hits a bit harder, and has a few temporary hit points to chew through. Also makes a nice reward if the players do decide to kill him.
A smart wight, but yes. Only diff I see is the INT is 16 on Ferol and 10 on a regular Wight.
Better call Ferol Sal
A quote directly from Matthew Mercer on the stream, said in game by Ludinas, but I think fit perfectly here and can be used to really convey the contempt Ferol Sal has for the gods.
"I watched the world burn at their (the gods) behest. I saw the ruin their games left of our people. The destruction they brought down to stunt the potential of mortal minds and hearts. They act only to preserve themselves."
It's neat, but considering the turmoil and chaos Ferol's creations have caused (all the infected and dead victims), and the fact that Salsvault is a lab for developing and storing diseases - I thought he should have more than longsword attacks at his disposal, especially considering the party is meant to meet him while he is IN THE LAB, working tirelessly on making new nefarious concoctions. So I added some potions and elixirs to his arsenal that he may want the party to help him test by ingesting, injecting or throwing at them (if they become hostile). Ferol is obviously not of a stable mindset when we see him. I wanted him to seem subtly unhinged, and have that represented by his wacky experiments while maintaining a facade of a logical and reasonable scientist who still thinks he's the best chance the mortals have, in the conflict against the tyrannical deities.
Here are a few ideas for potions he might have at his disposal:
Miasma Mist - a noxious gas that deals poison damage and applies disadvantage on concentration checks.
Soulbound Serum - when injected or consumed binds the soul to its mortal body, preventing the affected target from being resurrected and allowing Ferol control over the target's body and soul after death.
Dunamis Drought - affected creatures are locked to their least desirable outcome. On the target's next roll it must make another dice roll and take the lowest.
Gravity Pool - creates an area of gravitational force that pulls nearby creatures and makes it hard to move within it.
I intentionally left the details vague and open, so if anyone wants to use these ideas they can apply whatever seems balanced (or more fun).
