Traits

Shapechanger. If the yuki-onna isn't in running water, it can use its action to polymorph into a Medium cloud of mist, or back into its true form.

While in mist form, the yuki-onna can't take any actions, speak, or manipulate objects. It is weightless, has a flying speed of 120 feet, can hover, and can enter a hostile creature's space and stop there. In addition, if air can pass through a space, the mist can do so without squeezing, and it can’t pass through water. It has advantage on Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution saving throws, and it is immune to all nonmagical damage, except the damage it takes from hot water.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day) If the yuki-onna fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

 

Cold Aura: Any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of the yuki-onna takes 6 (1d10) cold damage

Cold Absorption. Whenever the yuki-onna is subjected to cold damage, it takes no damage and instead regains a number of hit points equal to the cold damage dealt. Additionally, the yuki-onna gains 10 hit points if it ends its turn in cold water, or is splashed by at least a gallon of it, and gains the "enlarge" effect of the enlarge/reduce spell for 4 hours (no concentration required). If the "enlarge" effect is triggered again via this trait, only the duration is renewed and no further growth occurs.

Yuki-onna Weaknesses. The yuki-onna has the following flaws:

Harmed by Hot Water. The yuki-onna takes 10 fire damage if it ends its turn in hot water, or is splashed by at least a gallon of it, and any "enlarge" effect granted by the Cold Absorption trait is instantly nullified.

Spellcasting. The yuki-onna is an 10th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit with spell attacks). The yuki-onna has the following sorcerer spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): chill touch, prestidigitation, ray of frost

1st level (4 slots): chromatic orb (cold damage only), shield

2nd level (3 slots): gust of wind, mirror image, misty step

3rd level (3 slots): dispel magic, sleet storm

4th level (3 slots): greater invisibility, ice storm

5th level (2 slots): cone of cold, scrying

The yuki-onna also has 10 sorcery points and the follow metamagic options: Empowered Spell, Heightened Spell, Quickened Spell.

Turn Resistance. The yuki-onna has advantage on saving throws against any effect that turns undead.

 

Actions

Multiattack. (Yuki-onna Form Only). The yuki-onna makes two attacks. It can use its Life Drain in place of one attack.

Unarmed Strike (Yuki-onna Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) cold damage. Instead of dealing damage, the yuki-onna can grapple the target (escape DC 16).

Life Drain (Yuki-onna Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one willing creature, or a creature that is grappled by the yuki-onna, incapacitated, or restrained. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) cold damage plus 10 (3d6) necrotic damage. The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken, and the yuki-onna regains hit points equal to that amount. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0. 

Cold Breath (Yuki-onna Form Only; Recharge 5-6). The yuki-onna exhales and casts cone of cold at 5th level without verbal, somatic, or material components.

Legendary Actions

The yuki-onna can take 4 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The yuki-onna regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Move. The yuki-onna moves up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Unarmed Strike. The yuki-onna makes one unarmed strike.

Life Drain (Costs 2 Actions). The yuki-onna uses its Life Drain.

Spell (Costs 2 Actions). The yuki-onna casts a spell

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the yuki-onna takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the yuki-onna can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Freezing fog fills a 15-foot-radius sphere centered on a point the yuki-onna can see within 120 feet of it. The fog spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. Each creature in the fog when it appears must make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw, taking 7 (2d6) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature that ends its turn in the fog takes 7 (2d6) cold damage. A wind of at least 20 miles per hour disperses the fog. The fog otherwise lasts until the yuki-onna uses this lair action again or until the yuki-onna dies.
  • Ice encases the floor, walls, and ceiling in a 60-foot radius around the yuki-onna. Each creature other than the yuki-onna on the ice in that area must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone. The ice lasts until the yuki-onna uses this lair action again and cannot be melted by heat or similar.
  • The yuki-onna creates an opaque wall of ice on a solid surface it can see within 120 feet of it. The wall can be up to 30 feet long, 30 feet high, and 1 foot thick. When the wall appears, each creature within its area is pushed 5 feet out of the wall's space; appearing on whichever side of the wall it wants. Each 10-foot section of the wall has AC 20, 30 hit points, and immunity to acid, cold, necrotic, poison, psychic, and bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical weapons. The wall disappears when the yuki-onna uses this lair action again or when the yuki-onna dies.

If the yuki-onna is destroyed, these effects end after 2d6 days.
