Hey Folks,
Today is a big day for our team. We're releasing the first production test of our Game Log which will allow you all to share your dice rolls with other players in your campaign!
This is part of our Digital Dice Open Beta and is now available to all users! Everyone will have access to test it out and give us feedback.
How-to Guide
If you'd like to try it out, make sure your character is in a campaign. If you don't have a campaign, you can create one and add your characters to it to test it out yourself.
Once you have a character in a campaign, you'll see the campaign listed in the top right of the character sheet like always as well as a new button that will open the Game Log.
Pro Tip: To test the game log by yourself, you can add multiple of your own characters to a single campaign, open those characters in different browser windows and watch one character's rolls display the results on the other character's Game Log.
With the Game Log open, you will see new rolls from other characters show up at the bottom of the Game Log. If you don't have the Game Log open when another character makes a roll, a notification will pop up to let you know.
If you prefer to keep the side panel open to always see the roll results of other players, you can use the buttons at the top of the panel to lock the side panel open and even nest it side-by-side in with the character sheet. Play around with what works best for you.
The Game Log also lets you see the history of your rolls and all other rolls from characters in the campaign! To see rolls in the past, scroll up into the history of the Game Log. When you find the roll you're looking for in the past, you can open it by clicking the result.
Also, at the bottom of the roll result, you'll see the actual die that was used with its result. If multiple dice were rolled, you can click that die in the bottom left of the roll result and see each die and its results. You can also get a better view of the dice set that was used for the roll. Clicking the"View Dice Set" will take you to the marketplace page where you can zoom in/out and rotate the dice set to see better details of the dice set itself.
The Game Log around D&D Beyond
You'll also notice the Game Log in other places around the site. The campaign page itself now has a slide-out panel that houses the Game Log for that campaign. You will also see the Game Log in the Combat Tracker for encounters that have linked a campaign in the Encounter Builder. On those pages, the Game Log works the same as it does on the character sheet.
The Future of the Game Log
Sharing dice results is just the start. Keep an eye out for new features on the Game Log.
Here's a list of things we have planned right away, in no particular order.
- The ability to only share with the DM for the campaign
- The ability to not share with the group
- Game Log on the mobile app
- Game Log and Avrae sync
- Rolling on Monster Stat Blocks in the Combat Tracker
Feedback
We want your feedback! Please continue to leave your feedback on the Digital Dice Feedback form. We want to hear from you.
We're excited to hear what you all think!
I'm curious about how to clear the log as well. Seems great, but I noticed that the rolls slow down/lock up with more rolls in the log. Would be nice to have a way to clear it after each session.
If I were to ask for features, it would be to customize the rolls. I'm playing a human with The Mark of Sentinel, which adds d4 to my perception and insight rolls, but that hasn't been automated, and I've seen other, similar features. Similarly, if I were wielding a Flame Tongue sword, I should be able to click d6 twice in the bottom left corner, then click to roll weapon damage and have it give me a total.
My DM hates it. Until a DM can control what rolls are exposed to the players, this is a non-starter. How do you disable it for a campaign?
Awesome!
It massively slows down rolls
If you're using Roll20 and DnDBeyond, have a look at https://beyond20.here-for-more.info/ for integrated dice rolls. You can use DnDB stat blocks for rolling and the results are pushed through to Roll20.
For me and my group this is a really interesting development but not yet more useful than the game log in our VTT.
A more developed encounter manager with integrated initiative tracking and a game log will be the real game changer (no pun intended). At present we're using a combination of DnDB, Beyond20, Roll20 and Discord (for voice and text).
Can't wait to see how you develop this over the coming months! Any news on if/when there will be a full VTT?
This is really cool, but is there a way to turn off the pop ups? One of my players has a slow tablet and it really makes her system chug when the pop up happens.
is there any way to clear a gamelog?
Please allow us to reverse the log so that the newest roll is on the top. Many of my players have to scroll up and down to see the log and it's excessively long since we can't clear it.
Is there a way to turn off the log? This would be great for DM's with players who have players who just spam rolls and make it excessively long.
First off I love the dice roll log! And I love how you've integrated Avrae into it so it displays the results into Discord. So awesome!
And here's my suggestions for improving the dice rolling log:
- Limit how many rolls to show at a time (reduce information overload for the poor DM)
- A way to clear old rolls out.
- And it looks like you're already planning for it but I'm going to say it anyway because maybe something here will make it even better!:
A setting to configure how much to show of a roll in the log - i.e. just show the final result and don't show modifiers/bonuses that were applied. This may also be an important feature when dice rolling functionality starts rolling out across the entire site like for monsters or other DM-only rolls. The purpose here is to help players not metagame by not revealing everything about the roll.
I suggest 3 setting options for how much information is revealed (if revealed):
Absolutely LOVE the !campaign command in Avrae that links to the campaign log into the discord channel! Brilliant!
I will now be patiently awaiting a way to target "-t" combatants in the avrae initiative tracker. THAT would be truly awesome for my players who can't wrap their heads around complicated avrae commands in discord. (For now, I'll just apply the damage roll manually with "!i hp <combatant> <+/-value>")
So my players and I noticed it today not a bad feature over all everyone liked it but can we disable the feature if we do not want to use it every game
this is very nice, i hope that D&D beyond will make it so players wont need to use other programs like roll20 in the future. Get it all done on D&D beyond
Feature request: Allow the DM to roll using the character sheets from Dndbeyond official and homebrew monsters, just like the players can on their sheets.
Please.... This would be the number one motivation for me to re-buy material I already have in my beloved paper version as it would add undeniable value that would offset buying it 'again' but then digitally for me.
"Rolling on Monster Stat Blocks in the Combat Tracker" would be most amazing! Thank you so much for developing these features.
it won't let me roll in it because of VTT and I can't find a solution anywhere
Hi I’m new I only just made my character how do I see campaigns to join
