Homebrew Woeforged Species Details

“Morality is a funny thing.  Everyone says a lich is the embodiment of evil, but how evil are we if the only reason you mortals live is by the terrors we have wrought."

-Kazimir the Eternal

Woeforged Traits

Your woeforged character has the following traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and two other ability score of your choice increases by 1 each.

Age

A typical warforged is between two and thirty years old. The maximum warforged lifespan remains a mystery; so far, warforged have shown no signs of deterioration due to age. You are immune to magical aging effects.

Alignment

In life, the Warforged are a largely servile 'race' of beings, they tend to follow the law and remain neutral as they carry out their tasks and orders in a routine fashion.  Completing a task, no matter how grueling, has a certain sense of inner peace accompanied with it for these automatons.

Your rebirth into a Woeforged offers you a uniquely active chance to alter yourself.  You embarked upon this journey for change, and that is the only guarantee your soul has been afforded. Your alignment may no longer contain neutrality and must generally be adhered to, it cannot change through any means short of divine intervention. This does not hinder your ability to work with others but given the choice, remember: You are eternal, you are a force unto yourself, and there is little chance they are better than you.

Size

Your size is Medium. To set your height and weight randomly, start with rolling a size modifier:

Size modifier = 2d6

Height = 5 feet + 10 inches + your size modifier in inches

Weight in pounds = 270 + (4 × your size modifier)

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Lich Resilience

You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits:

  • You are immune to all poison.
  • You are resistant to necrotic damage.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You are immune to disease.
  • You don’t need to sleep, and cannot be put to sleep against your will.

Deathless sleep

When you take a long rest, you must spend at least four hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.

Integrated Protection

Your body has built-in defensive layers, which can be enhanced with armor:

  • You gain a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
  • You can don only armor with which you have proficiency. To don armor other than a shield, you must incorporate it into your body over the course of 1 hour, during which you remain in contact with the armor. To doff armor, you must spend 1 hour removing it. You can rest while donning or doffing armor in this way.
  • While you exist, the armor incorporated into your body can’t be removed against your will.

Specialized Design

You gain one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency of your choice.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.

Adamantine Soul

The process of creating a lich involves creating a phylactery and storing the soul of the creature in it, something the Warforged's unique nature prevents.

Warforged are created as soulless automatons, gifted with enough life to hold sentience and created for a particular task.  Not all warforged grow souls, but you and others like you have progressed far enough to have done so.  This confers a measure of control over your reforming process.

The phylactery becomes a part of you, and your Immutable nature progresses further.  As you become undead your form changes to look rusted or patina'd, your eyes and energy gain the undead looking colors of your choice, and of course the fundamental truth of warforged is revealed to you.  You learn a great deal about your own origins in this moment.
