Dragonborn Species Details
The ancestors of dragonborn hatched from the eggs of chromatic and metallic dragons. One story holds that these eggs were blessed by the dragon gods Bahamut and Tiamat, who wanted to populate the multiverse with people created in their image. Another story claims that dragons created the first dragonborn without the gods’ blessings. Whatever their origin, dragonborn have made homes for themselves on the Material Plane.
Dragonborn look like wingless, bipedal dragons— scaly, bright-eyed, and thick-boned with horns on their heads—and their coloration and other features are reminiscent of their draconic ancestors.
Dragonborn Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 5–7 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Draconic Ancestry
Your lineage stems from a dragon progenitor. Choose the kind of dragon from the Draconic Ancestors table. Your choice affects your Breath Weapon and Damage Resistance traits as well as your appearance.
| Dragon | Damage Type |
|---|---|
| Black | Acid |
| Blue | Lightning |
| Brass | Fire |
| Bronze | Lightning |
| Copper | Acid |
| Gold | Fire |
| Green | Poison |
| Red | Fire |
| Silver | Cold |
| White | Cold |
Breath Weapon
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of magical energy in either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide (choose the shape each time). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes 1d10 damage of the type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 when you reach character levels 5 (2d10), 11 (3d10), and 17 (4d10).
You can use this Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Damage Resistance
You have Resistance to the damage type determined by your Draconic Ancestry trait.
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Draconic Flight
When you reach character level 5, you can channel draconic magic to give yourself temporary flight. As a Bonus Action, you sprout spectral wings on your back that last for 10 minutes or until you retract the wings (no action required) or have the Incapacitated condition. During that time, you have a Fly Speed equal to your Speed. Your wings appear to be made of the same energy as your Breath Weapon. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a Long Rest.

Posted Nov 6, 2025I like the dragonborn! One thing I'll say though, is that it needs a little diversity in ancestry. I mean, there's not even a water ancestry!

Posted Nov 17, 2025Well, at level 5 you do get a temporary flight ability.
But I think the reason why it's not permanent is that it's a game balance issue. Dragonborn already have two powerful species features — the breath weapon and the damage resistance — and giving them a third would make them too much more powerful than other species options. There are species with permanent flight abilities, like the Aarakocra, but you'll notice they don't have much else in the way of species features.

Posted Nov 29, 2025Claws, bite and tail attacks should be baked in. If no tail, you can compensate with adding an added dmg die etc for Claws and Bite. This should Imo be added for any race/ species that have such natural features, but can also do other things than DMG. Like for Tieflings a bonus to Sleight of hand for tail shenanigans. Tabaxi can have piercing claw attacks whereas Dragonborn have slashing. Lizardmen and Tortles can have powerful bites on par with Dragonborn etc.
With tail. 1d6 bludgeoning or piercing ( some ancetries hail bodily weapons from true dragons )
Claws 2d4
Bite 1d8.
If you choose NO tail, compensate with upping the dmg die for the remaining natural weapons.
All this can be very balanced and adjustable. Dragonborns of GRAY dragons? Those without any breath weapon, but supreme in melee combat? 1d10 for tail, claws 2d6 ( 2d8 if no tail ), bite, 1d10 ( 1d12 if no tail ) and +1 AC baked in since their hide is very thick.
Nothing against dragonborns with tails. PROBLEM is that at least new DnD fans may not be able and get confused by whats the difference between Draognborn( tailless, of chromatic, gem, metallic ancestries and of lesser known draconic ancestries like yellow, orange, purple, deep, iron, ruby, jacinth, cobalt etc ), Draconians ( chromatic, gem and metallinc, mixed into being something of their own by rituals and some explodes at death, varies with wings and tails ), Dragonspawn ( Tiamats take on Bahamuts dragonborn in the first iterations OBSELETE ), Dragonkin ( wide spectrum of mostly naked dragonlike creature, little info ) and Half-Dragons ( can be Half of any other creature, including humanoids, centaurs, bears etc )
Gutting shame they didnt add in Gem dragonborn options in PHB 24, while adding improvements from other sourcebooks like Tasha but Fizban.
Adding GEM ancestries fro Draconic Bloodline/ Sorcery. The blatant whining that " Force is OP " Nonsense. Its still limited and can still be balanced around. YOU re the DM and Im a kindred dm, I of course let players have capable, yet balanced dragonbo.rn.
SIDENOTE: I would add ALL elemental types to ANY spells that have not a full list, like Chromatic Orb and Bolt. Just limit the use of certain elements, YOU deem too " op ". Say can only use Force Chromatic Bolt only 3 per Short rest
Least. Double resistanced due to chromatic, metallic and gem ancestries of lesser known variants. Adapt to ONLY one per Short or Long rest.
More than one breath weapon dmg type, be it elemetnal or one of the three physical? SPLIT the damage for balance.
Purple dragonborn? Breathe plasma breath. 1d10 per 5th level to 1d6 Fire and 1d6 Lightning per 5th level.
Based on Richard Alan LLoyds true purple dragon from Upper Underdark. Also watch Dungeon Dads missing dragon videos. PLENTY inspiration for dragonborn inspirations!.
Other dragonborns?
Yellows hailing from yellow dragons, with their wing setup akin to bronzes or coppers. The fastest, yet arguably weakest of chromatics. Breathing salt crystals in a saline spew. These dragonborn can be purely physical in attacks. Breathweapon, 50/ 50 bludeoning and piercing. Resistance? Choose bludgeoning, slashing or piercing per Short or Long rest.
Dont forget you can add variations from other, 3rd party publicatiotns. Like yellow grassland dragons from Tales of the Valiant, breathe sharp beams of light, aka RADIANT. So there you have another yellow dragonborn option.
Same or Orange dragonborn based on orange dragons from dnd, OR the orangish Wasteland dragons from Creature Codex. Bludgeoning and Fire, or the variant with Force?
GREY dragonborns? Purely physical attacks with higher dmg die, NO breath weapon, + 1 AC baked in. Balance? only a Movement of 25 feet.
Should be ZERO problem for WotC to not be so blindingly stingy about deepen the options, not only for Dragonborns but for other species aswell. Balance can be done afterwards. Its important to give the full spectrum, publizised in official sourcebooks. THEN players and dms can argue and bicker.
