Elf Species Details
Created by the god Corellon, the first elves could change their forms at will. They lost this ability when Corellon cursed them for plotting with the deity Lolth, who tried and failed to usurp Corellon’s dominion. When Lolth was cast into the Abyss, most elves renounced her and earned Corellon’s forgiveness, but that which Corellon had taken from them was lost forever.
No longer able to shape-shift at will, the elves retreated to the Feywild, where their sorrow was deepened by that plane’s influence. Over time, curiosity led many of them to explore other planes of existence, including worlds in the Material Plane.
Elves have pointed ears and lack facial and body hair. They live for around 750 years, and they don’t sleep but instead enter a trance when they need to rest. In that state, they remain aware of their surroundings while immersing themselves in memories and meditations.
An environment subtly transforms elves after they inhabit it for a millennium or more, and it grants them certain kinds of magic. Drow, high elves, and wood elves are examples of elves who have been transformed thus.
Drow
Drow typically dwell in the Underdark and have been shaped by it. Some drow individuals and societies avoid the Underdark altogether yet carry its magic. In the Eberron setting, for example, drow dwell in rainforests and cyclopean ruins on the continent of Xen’drik.
High Elves
High elves have been infused with the magic of crossings between the Feywild and the Material Plane. On some worlds, high elves refer to themselves by other names. For example, they call themselves sun or moon elves in the Forgotten Realms setting, Silvanesti and Qualinesti in the Dragonlance setting, and Aereni in the Eberron setting
Wood Elves
Wood elves carry the magic of primeval forests within themselves. They are known by many other names, including wild elves, green elves, and forest elves. Grugach are reclusive wood elves of the Greyhawk setting, while the Kagonesti and the Tairnadal are wood elves of the Dragonlance and Eberron settings, respectively.
Elf Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 5–6 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Elven Lineage
You are part of a lineage that grants you supernatural abilities. Choose a lineage from the Elven Lineages table. You gain the level 1 benefit of that lineage.
When you reach character levels 3 and 5, you learn a higher-level spell, as shown on the table. You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for the spells you cast with this trait (choose the ability when you select the lineage).
Lineage | Level 1 | Level 3 | Level 5 |
---|---|---|---|
Drow | The range of your Darkvision increases to 120 feet. You also know the Dancing Lights cantrip. | Faerie Fire | Darkness |
High Elf | You know the Prestidigitation cantrip. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can replace that cantrip with a different cantrip from the Wizard spell list. | Detect Magic | Misty Step |
Wood Elf | Your Speed increases to 35 feet. You also know the Druidcraft cantrip. | Longstrider | Pass without Trace |
Fey Ancestry
You have Advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the Charmed condition.
Keen Senses
You have proficiency in the Insight, Perception, or Survival skill.
Trance
You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a Long Rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.
Love the mechanics of this app first time doing anything in the D&D world and it was easier than I though
Elven subraces are iconic with notable differences and unique traits. The drow are the dark elves, dark skinned with white hair, living in the deep, dark places of the world. Their theme tends to be more grave. High elves are the magical, wise immortals, blessing the lesser races with their wit, wisdom, and intelligence. They are fair, and embody the idea of elves as scholars. Their theme tends to be more studious/imperious.
As you can see from these two examples, the elven subraces have distinct cultures, identities, and even appearances, although the line blurs between high elves and wood elves. The dwarven subraces just didn't have that. There was very little difference between the hill and the mountain dwarves physiologically and socially, other than the size of the lumps of earth that they lived on.
Yeah there were some differences, but they are explained much better by dwarves living in different places and thus having different cultures than by there being different subsets in the dwarven species. Besides, mechanically the main difference between the two was whether you got a strength or a wisdom increase, but ability score increases come from backgrounds instead of races now.
I think drow do still suffer in sunlight, unless my player's manual is outdated. It says that drow roll at disadvantage in bright sunlight on certain rolls (attack and perception rolls, I think). I could be completely mistaken on all of this, but now I am curious.
Love the Drizzt books
What is the official Elf age of maturity according to dnd 5e 2024 addition
so excited
Why'd they remove all of the stat bonuses? Seems a bit unnecessary to me personally. Because if you look at a side by side comparison of a dwarf and elf, the dwarf will be more inclined to be hardy and tough, where the elf will be more inclined to be more agile and nimble. Though calling it species instead of race was a good change that has been needed.
Also, will they ever consider bringing back the 4e weapons table? I was looking it over and I love it so much, they added a lot of special rules and crit modifiers that made each weapon unique and interesting. I suppose bringing this back could mean removing weapon mastery, but scimitars landed a crit on nat 18,19, and 20, and war picks had a X4 crit. There are also exotic weapons that add more flavor to the game, adding more special monk weapons like nunchaku and siangham.
Why's that?
I think this is because of the in lore reason for it, like you said, if they lived in the material plane they would lose the sensitivity, and in the drow lore, it says that the drow of the setting do not live in the underdark
The sunlight sensitivity was eye sight based not skin based, in other words the same sensitivity you have when you leave a dark movie theater after having watched a Lord of the Rings marathon is what they experience but for much longer because 30-750 years of not being in direct sunlight would have caused their iris dilator and iris sphincter to be substantially substantially imbalanced.
They are saying it isn't genetic.
Building my Elf character
The lineages have to be different visually in order to be included.
Trance is such an ugly, clumsy word. They should have kept the more elegant revery.
where's shadar kai
I mean each to their own. If you dont like it or prefer 2014 just house rule it into the game. I think they did it so newer players were more open to playing drow without having to roleplay walking in the sun.
First time playing and elf looks fun
always play as an elf in dnd
Exactly - you can be an Elf but not be raised by Elves i.e. urchin background. If you want to show that you were raised by other elves/speak elvish, just make it a part of your background.
did the drow get removed from the handbook?????? I bought it specifically because I wanted to make a drow character. Where is my drow option? 😭
