Elf Species Details
Created by the god Corellon, the first elves could change their forms at will. They lost this ability when Corellon cursed them for plotting with the deity Lolth, who tried and failed to usurp Corellon’s dominion. When Lolth was cast into the Abyss, most elves renounced her and earned Corellon’s forgiveness, but that which Corellon had taken from them was lost forever.
No longer able to shape-shift at will, the elves retreated to the Feywild, where their sorrow was deepened by that plane’s influence. Over time, curiosity led many of them to explore other planes of existence, including worlds in the Material Plane.
Elves have pointed ears and lack facial and body hair. They live for around 750 years, and they don’t sleep but instead enter a trance when they need to rest. In that state, they remain aware of their surroundings while immersing themselves in memories and meditations.
An environment subtly transforms elves after they inhabit it for a millennium or more, and it grants them certain kinds of magic. Drow, high elves, and wood elves are examples of elves who have been transformed thus.
Drow
Drow typically dwell in the Underdark and have been shaped by it. Some drow individuals and societies avoid the Underdark altogether yet carry its magic. In the Eberron setting, for example, drow dwell in rainforests and cyclopean ruins on the continent of Xen’drik.
High Elves
High elves have been infused with the magic of crossings between the Feywild and the Material Plane. On some worlds, high elves refer to themselves by other names. For example, they call themselves sun or moon elves in the Forgotten Realms setting, Silvanesti and Qualinesti in the Dragonlance setting, and Aereni in the Eberron setting
Wood Elves
Wood elves carry the magic of primeval forests within themselves. They are known by many other names, including wild elves, green elves, and forest elves. Grugach are reclusive wood elves of the Greyhawk setting, while the Kagonesti and the Tairnadal are wood elves of the Dragonlance and Eberron settings, respectively.
Elf Traits
Creature Type: Humanoid
Size: Medium (about 5–6 feet tall)
Speed: 30 feet
Darkvision
You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.
Elven Lineage
You are part of a lineage that grants you supernatural abilities. Choose a lineage from the Elven Lineages table. You gain the level 1 benefit of that lineage.
When you reach character levels 3 and 5, you learn a higher-level spell, as shown on the table. You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.
Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for the spells you cast with this trait (choose the ability when you select the lineage).
Lineage | Level 1 | Level 3 | Level 5 |
---|---|---|---|
Drow | The range of your Darkvision increases to 120 feet. You also know the Dancing Lights cantrip. | Faerie Fire | Darkness |
High Elf | You know the Prestidigitation cantrip. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can replace that cantrip with a different cantrip from the Wizard spell list. | Detect Magic | Misty Step |
Wood Elf | Your Speed increases to 35 feet. You also know the Druidcraft cantrip. | Longstrider | Pass without Trace |
Fey Ancestry
You have Advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the Charmed condition.
Keen Senses
You have proficiency in the Insight, Perception, or Survival skill.
Trance
You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a Long Rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in a trancelike meditation, during which you retain consciousness.
The first species I played when I got started in 2020!
Why do Elves receive sub-races and Dwarves had them taken away?
Elf was my first back in 1984
So I do not speak elven unless I choose it as one of my languages? I do not know about that. I see a house rule in the future.
Language is not taught by blood but through upbringing or learning. So make it part of your background. ;)
What about eladrin elf sub-race, where is it.
Good thing how drow don't have sunlight sensitivity anymore
I'm glad they got rid of the ridiculous lifespan (since living 750 years is just overpowered), but there's nothing to replace it? How long do elves live in the 2024 edition?
"Elves have pointed ears and lack facial and body hair. They live for around 750 years, and they don’t sleep but instead enter a trance when they need to rest. In that state, they remain aware of their surroundings while immersing themselves in memories and meditations."
3rd paragraph.
That made drow super interesting to play. Stripping all the nuance out of the game doesn’t make it better.
My guess is that the dwarven sub-races where too similar to each other. The halfling sub-races was probably removed of the same reason.
Trance is actually a 4-hour long rest now
Agreed. Just why?
So the Drow "monsters" have sunlight sensitivity but we as a Drow player character dont have it? How does that make any sence!? For a Drow to lose the sunlight sensitivity they would have to live for many and I mean MANY generations on the surface in daylight for then to devolve it (if thats even possible for Drow to devolve it). Its like we are playing a different species by that point since thats one of their most iconic traits.
Yes I get it, it made us weaker in direct sunlight but we were also much stronger at night/dark places then any other species with normal 60 ft. darkvision due to the fact that you were able to see and attack creatures from outside of their darkvision with range weapons and spells. So balance wise its a bad idea since you have better darkvision then other races and no drawback for it.
I don't see a reason to take that iconic trait way that makes the race more unique and special. It made Drow more interesting to play, for example it caused you to think and plan on how and were to take out a target without suffering the sunlight sensitivity effect. The drow are my favourite race in all DnD and are also my main and most played race, and seeing this unique trait be taken away is just a massive disappointment. I will always prefer to pick the 2014 Drow then this.
Well, there goes my Longbow Elf Rogue.
I for one approve of the removal of weapon and armor proficiencies from the various races/species. Racial bonuses make more sense if they are related to the race's physiology, while the weapons and other tools that you use should be based on your character's training, hence classes, backgrounds, and feats.
I can understand that.
Though I’d be happier if Rogue had longbow proficiency (never made sense to me how a Rogue can make a sneak attack with any ranged weapon, but doesn’t have access to all ranged weapons).
Or if each class could have one pick at any weapon proficiency.
Or if one of the background’s origin feat allowed you to pick a weapon proficiency.
Granted, it’s a personal aesthetic, the longbow just feels cooler than a shortbow or light crossbow. The rogue, the scout, the sniper.
I suppose only the DM can stop me homebrewing a background with a feat that allows you longbow proficiency.
I always assumed the absence of the longbow was because it wasn't a very "stealthy" weapon.
Longbows are like 6' tall. I'd liken it to sneaking around with a greatsword; sure you could specially train to use it, but it's not part of the normal regimen.
thanks for adding drow
YES! ELEDRIN ARE SO GOOD!
