You assume a different form. When you cast the spell, choose one of the following options, the effects of which last for the duration of the spell. While the spell lasts, you can end one option as an action to gain the benefits of a different one.
Aquatic Adaptation. You adapt your body to an aquatic environment, sprouting gills and growing webbing between your fingers. You can breathe underwater and gain a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.
Change Appearance. You transform your appearance. You decide what you look like, including your height, weight, facial features, sound of your voice, hair length, coloration, and distinguishing characteristics, if any. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your statistics change. You also can't appear as a creature of a different size than you, and your basic shape stays the same; if you're bipedal, you can't use this spell to become quadrupedal, for instance. At any time for the duration of the spell, you can use your action to change your appearance in this way again.
Natural Weapons. You grow claws, fangs, spines, horns, or a different natural weapon of your choice. Your unarmed strikes deal 1d6 bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, as appropriate to the natural weapon you chose, and you are proficient with your unarmed strikes. Finally, the natural weapon is magic and you have a +1 bonus to the attack and damage rolls you make using it.

Posted Dec 22, 2020hi , ive been looking for a bit and trying to work out , my character is a winged tiefling , would it be reasonable to use this spell to hide the wings ? is it allowed or stopped under standard rules or is it down to the DM ? because if not its really going to restrict the forms I can take

Posted Jan 17, 2021Working on a home brew for a bard subclass, “College of Splendor”...they focus on visual arts infused with magic; so painting, drawing & sculpting.
They have a very “flexible” view on physical form; so their early subclass ability gives them a use of Alter Self that can be used every short rest, minus concentration (a bit of a gamble to eliminate concentration; but the spell is not so powerful from a combat perspective).
I love this spell; and feel it doesn’t get as much use as some.

Posted Feb 5, 2021I'd say no, in most cases, because the spell mentions how they appear, especially the fact that most appear from growth of the features, they don't just appear. However, artificers can learn this spell, and I'd say that it is plausible depending on your setting. Unfortunately for my attempts to describe these things, the real answer is "ask your DM."

Posted Feb 20, 2021maybe ask if they wanna play a changeling id say that makes the most sense. since ya get on demand shapeshifting that includes gender and all that stuff. plus what you said is literally in they're description A changeling can shift its face and form with a thought. Many changelings use this gift as a form of artistic and emotional expression. sounds perfect

Posted Feb 26, 2021it actually doesn't state that the changes are purely cosmetic, only that your statistics don't change and your basic shape, like being bipedal, stays the same. a character's biological sex has no influence on their statistics and most certainly doesn't change their basic shape more than changing race would, so changing your biological sex for an hour should be fair game

Posted Mar 7, 2021Does anyone have some homebrewed rules for different "adaptations" other than aquatic? For example, Aerial Adaptation where you have grown flying squirrel gliding wing, or Mountain adaptation with resistance to cold and bonus to climbing?
or did I just make them? lol

Posted Mar 14, 2021It honestly seems to overpower the spell completely if it allows flight. Then what's the point of the fly spell at level 3? And what's the point of the levitate spell at level 2?

Posted Apr 1, 2021As a Moon Druid with a Thousand Forms, considering that the way their shapeshifting works. I would say Yes.. it would change the clothes and gear to fit you...
Because the idea of Alter Self is supposed to match this, I would say clothes and gear would also shift slightly to match. I don't think a Great Sword would become a Greater Great Sword, but I would argue armor and clothes increase in size slightly..

Posted May 30, 2021I disappointed that DND didn't take the initiative and allow natural weapons to be used as natural armor as well.. Like a porcupine.. Of course these rules are opened for interpretation, but to often, DM will not permit was isn't "standardized" so this option becomes matter of debate rather then a creative expression..

Posted Jun 16, 2021DM question; since you are able to adapt to an aquatic environment, would it be reasonable to allow someone casting this spell to adapt their bodies to a hot environment? I.e gaining something like bigger ears or one of those neck flaps that let animals diffuse heat more easily.
So if your party is travelling through like a desert, or even fire elemental plane, cast alter self to negate the con saves for exhaustion because you’ve adapted to heat?

Posted Sep 8, 2021I wouldn't say flying or hovering, but more of a controlled fall. I.e. not taking fall damage. I guess like feather fall but with only self and for a duration, not just one fall. I can see how this could become op, but it does have its limits (what do you do when you are on the ground? you now have these useless skin flaps.)

Posted Oct 28, 2021You cant gain additional limbs but your dm might let you turn your arms into wings but your dm is fully in their right to not allow that as flight for 2nd lvl spell is op and the spell clearly defines 3 uses already
