Squirming, ebony tentacles fill a 20-foot square on ground that you can see within range. For the duration, these tentacles turn the ground in the area into difficult terrain.
When a creature enters the affected area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, the creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 3d6 bludgeoning damage and be restrained by the tentacles until the spell ends. A creature that starts its turn in the area and is already restrained by the tentacles takes 3d6 bludgeoning damage.
A creature restrained by the tentacles can use its action to make a Strength or Dexterity check (its choice) against your spell save DC. On a success, it frees itself.
* - (a piece of tentacle from a giant octopus or a giant squid)
Hi all - not sure if it's intentional, but this Basic Rules version of the spell lists the effect/damage as restrained, whereas the PHB version (Evard's Black Tentacles) lists the effect/damage as bludgeoning. Both are correct since the spell does both, but maybe the two versions should be the same to prevent confusion that there are differences between them?
You got a point there, some GM can just mix the two together and add those qualitys.
Q: Do the tentacles target the caster?
Since it doesn't specify, you can assume the tentacles target anyone in the area.
Hmm. Has anyone tried Erupting Earth as a counterspell, casting ahead of your path, like clearing a minefield?
Stop giving the spells different names, or make it possible to turn off. Please. I don’t want this nonexistent spell to keep popping up whenever I try to look at a list of spells.
It would be NICE if the spell included the full name to look it up in PHB/Basic rules!
How do i add this to a charater sheet? its not on the list of spells.
Also having this issue as a Great Old One warlock
The spell is normally called "Evard's Black Tentacles" everywhere else I look, and it has the same effects/properties as the ones listed here.
Bard taking this as a Magical Secret: This'll be fun...
DM: (visible concern)
Bard: (uses it to restrain a bunch of enemies, forcing them to give feedback about their comedy sketch ideas)
DM: Okay, that's actually pretty cool.
Can the caster be inside the area of effect and not be harmed by his own spell?
Is the caster a creature? That should answer your question. Since nothing in here specifies the caster is unaffected by this spell, assume that it would apply as appropriate if/when they enter or start their turn in the area.
how tall are these tentacles?
