You briefly become one with nature and gain knowledge of the surrounding territory. In the outdoors, the spell gives you knowledge of the land within 3 miles of you. In caves and other natural underground settings, the radius is limited to 300 feet. The spell doesn't function where nature has been replaced by construction, such as in dungeons and towns.
You instantly gain knowledge of up to three facts of your choice about any of the following subjects as they relate to the area:
- terrain and bodies of water
- prevalent plants, minerals, animals, or peoples
- powerful celestials, fey, fiends, elementals, or undead
- influence from other planes of existence
- buildings
For example, you could determine the location of powerful undead in the area, the location of major sources of safe drinking water, and the location of any nearby towns.
Doesn’t Totem Warrior also get this spell?
Yes. As a ritual only, which may be why it's not listed here. Also, Barbarians aren't spell casters.
Yes, but only as a ritual through direct use of a class feature - the tags are only for those classes that have the Spellcasting feature and can access a given spell through that feature. For example, note that Bards get Magical Secrets, which gives them a bonus spells from any class list. Despite this, the only spells with the "Bard" tag are those which appear on the Bard spell list.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s strange that you can’t cast this spell while in a town but that you can use it to locate towns?
Probably.
Think of it like being in a dark room, you can't see. But looking at that side of a house from the outside, you can see the light is off on that room and other rooms have their lights on and what not.
Being in a town, you can't connect to nature, but being away from town you can see where nature has been lost.
Ah. That makes sense. I was guessing it would be something like that.
Excellent analogy to explain the difference.
This is the Oath of the Ancients paladin your thinking about ancestral guardian barbarian.
Coming in late to this thread.
Player is using it for the first time ever in our group.
So how do determine what is powerful. Is there a CR threshold and what would it be?
Think of it more from the stand point of lore, i wouldn't tell them about a high CR zombie but i would tell them about a lich.
Edit: new to the app; didn't scroll down.
