You step into the border regions of the Ethereal Plane, in the area where it overlaps with your current plane. You remain in the Border Ethereal for the duration or until you use your action to dismiss the spell. During this time, you can move in any direction. If you move up or down, every foot of movement costs an extra foot. You can see and hear the plane you originated from, but everything there looks gray, and you can't see anything more than 60 feet away.
While on the Ethereal Plane, you can only affect and be affected by other creatures on that plane. Creatures that aren't on the Ethereal Plane can't perceive you and can't interact with you, unless a special ability or magic has given them the ability to do so.
You ignore all objects and effects that aren't on the Ethereal Plane, allowing you to move through objects you perceive on the plane you originated from.
When the spell ends, you immediately return to the plane you originated from in the spot you currently occupy. If you occupy the same spot as a solid object or creature when this happens, you are immediately shunted to the nearest unoccupied space that you can occupy and take force damage equal to twice the number of feet you are moved.
This spell has no effect if you cast it while you are on the Ethereal Plane or a plane that doesn't border it, such as one of the Outer Planes.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 8th level or higher, you can target up to three willing creatures (including you) for each slot level above 7th. The creatures must be within 10 feet of you when you cast the spell.
Does this mean you can use this spell to go through doors and other objects that block passage to you?
"You ignore all objects and effects that aren't on the Ethereal Plane, allowing you to move through objects you perceive on the plane you originated from."
I would say so, yes.
Does the person coming from the plane take the damage or both the player/creature
How do you roll for this spell???
You don't, you just say something beautiful or dreadful or ominous related to your faith and simply GO there, kind of like Raziel's transportation to the spirit realm in Soul Reaver, only stronger (as he cannot willfully manifest in the material plane without a special conduit, for he is dead, a mere spirit).
When my bard casts this the verbal component will be singing 'Etherial Girl' in the style of Madonna
Is it possible to exit the border plane into the Ethereal Plane proper?
According to the description of the spell, you remain in the border ethereal. However, if you check the Player's Handbook on the planes, it says you can use this spell to traverse the ethereal and enter any plane that borders it (Shadowfell, Feywild, and the elemental planes).
There are two sources in the same section, which you can find HERE and HERE.
EDIT: There is a section in the Dungeon Master's Guide that states Plane Shift is required to transverse the Deep Ethereal. You can find that section HERE.
It also just spells (pun intended) it out specifically HERE.
What if i let something in there and then i leave this plane. Will it stay there or will this object travel back with me in its original plane?
So, you could just walk through the whole dungeon, yea?
Since you can only perceive 60 feet in the Ethereal Plane and the material plane cannot perceive or touch you without some kind of magic, would this spell make a good stealth tool? Are there any cons of using this spell for stealth? (Example: Monsters native to the Ethereal Plane)
Ghosts, phase spiders, other high level spell casters, and walls of force, ethereal solids, or areas protected by the forbiddance spell could be a challenge.
How isn't this conjuration? Last time I checked, you couldn't transmute onto another plane.
It would probably stay. If you had a familiar, you could summon them once you got there to spy from the border ethereal.
at a guess it's transforming your body into something that can exist in the ethereal plane
You don't roll at all, it just works. It's a 7th level spell. You don't roll for unseen servant. It just works. (Also there's stuff optional stuff in the DMG about encounters or complications for travelling in the ethereal that you can roll for).
Pro tip, as a person who has been in many campaigns with Planeswalkers: Always take this spell if you think at any point you will go to a plane where you wouldn't naturally survive, especially the elemental plane of earth.
So is there a counter to this spell or ability these days like dimensional Anchor
My characters are 12th level and caught between rakasha and mind flayers and they can't stop anything from escaping. They have yet to get lucky and kill a mind flayer.
So succubus are they able to move through the entirety of this plane or just the border like this spell when it comes to the plane travel
