You choose a creature you can see within range and mystically mark it as your quarry. Until the spell ends, you deal an extra 1d6 damage to the target whenever you hit it with a weapon attack, and you have advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) or Wisdom (Survival) check you make to find it. If the target drops to 0 hit points before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd or 4th level, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th level or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours.

Posted Feb 3, 2024Based on the wording, I do have a little confusion: "If the target drops to 0 hit points before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature."
To me, this means that if the target of the HM disappears into another dimension and does not drop to 0HP, the HM remains on them for the duration of the spell and can't be moved to another enemy. Or, if you put the HM on someone then realize they aren't an enemy, you're stuck with it (unless you kill this non-enemy).

Posted Feb 16, 2024I would agree, in both of those examples, the creature is still under the effect of the spell.
In the second case, you can end the spell early (because it's a concentration spell, and you can willingly drop concentration on your own spell at any time) though you don't then get the opportunity to shift it to another target.

Posted May 1, 2024I argued this once with my DM and they said that it doesn't know and also that there is no "visual feedback" so it isn't seen, only you know it and only you can tell it's a mark of any nature. Imagine it being outlined though your eyes only.

Posted Jul 25, 2024No, that's just a quirk of how D&D Beyond has the spell classified. Since it just says "extra damage" is applied when you hit with a weapon attack, the extra damage is the same type that the normal weapon damage is.

Posted Mar 23, 2025What exactly does "If the target drops to 0 hit points before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature" mean? does it mean that if the enemy dies you can just move the same mark onto a different enemy at the cost of no additional spell slots or no? because Hunters mark is already a spell that you cast with bonus action so it seems redundant to state "mark a new creature" if your just recasting the spell but would make more sense if it was using the same spell (within the same hour).
