You create a magical restraint to hold a creature that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be bound by the spell; if it succeeds, it is immune to this spell if you cast it again. While affected by this spell, the creature doesn't need to breathe, eat, or drink, and it doesn't age. Divination spells can't locate or perceive the target.
When you cast the spell, you choose one of the following forms of imprisonment.
Burial. The target is entombed far beneath the earth in a sphere of magical force that is just large enough to contain the target. Nothing can pass through the sphere, nor can any creature teleport or use planar travel to get into or out of it.
The special component for this version of the spell is a small mithral orb.
Chaining. Heavy chains, firmly rooted in the ground, hold the target in place. The target is restrained until the spell ends, and it can't move or be moved by any means until then.
The special component for this version of the spell is a fine chain of precious metal.
Hedged Prison. The spell transports the target into a tiny demiplane that is warded against teleportation and planar travel. The demiplane can be a labyrinth, a cage, a tower, or any similar confined structure or area of your choice.
The special component for this version of the spell is a miniature representation of the prison made from jade.
Minimus Containment. The target shrinks to a height of 1 inch and is imprisoned inside a gemstone or similar object. Light can pass through the gemstone normally (allowing the target to see out and other creatures to see in), but nothing else can pass through, even by means of teleportation or planar travel. The gemstone can't be cut or broken while the spell remains in effect.
The special component for this version of the spell is a large, transparent gemstone, such as a corundum, diamond, or ruby.
Slumber. The target falls asleep and can't be awoken. The special component for this version of the spell consists of rare soporific herbs.
Ending the Spell. During the casting of the spell, in any of its versions, you can specify a condition that will cause the spell to end and release the target. The condition can be as specific or as elaborate as you choose, but the GM must agree that the condition is reasonable and has a likelihood of coming to pass. The conditions can be based on a creature's name, identity, or deity but otherwise must be based on observable actions or qualities and not based on intangibles such as level, class, or hit points.
A dispel magic spell can end the spell only if it is cast as a 9th-level spell, targeting either the prison or the special component used to create it.
You can use a particular special component to create only one prison at a time. If you cast the spell again using the same component, the target of the first casting is immediately freed from its binding.
* - (a vellum depiction or a carved statuette in the likeness of the target, and a special component that varies according to the version of the spell you choose, worth at least 500 gp per Hit Die of the target)
As a Dom I used this to create a cool plot hook where the party had to survive in a eternal maze with only one safe spot (Think maze runner)
I'm sure your subs enjoyed bondage you provided
A couple things to note:
You can cast this on yourself if you want. You can specify whatever end condition you want, including "I say that I don't want to be imprisoned anymore". I see this mostly being a thing some NPCs might do.
You don't need the vellum depiction or carved statuette in the likeness of the target if you're using an arcane focus, since that material component isn't consumed and doesn't have any cost. Makes it a lot easier to use.
Edit on 2/27/2021, since I continue to get replies on this comment: These are 2 separate notes. Obviously, if you are planning to cast this spell on yourself, then it's trivial to make a vellum depiction or carved statuette of yourself. The note about using an arcane focus is relevant if you want to cast this spell on a creature without making a statuette of them first. Of course you still need the special component, since that does have a gold cost.
I take it that means normal audio, Message, Rary's Telepathic Bond, Telepathy, etc also doesn't path through...?
I'm assuming the 'communicate anywhere on the same plane' stuff is overwritten by Imprisonment being at least a level higher than any of the private communication spells. (That I have access to anyways... [only have the player's hand book])
Theres a case to be made for using all 5 of the options on a single entity tbh. Just completely shut down one particular thing for all eternity, haha.
used this to trap a death tyrant that was an NPCs phylactery. so basically I secured an unkillable monster to make another unkillable monster. people tried everything short of wish to kill the NPC's phylactery. was fun
This is such a cool plot device. I'm definitely stealing this.
Not just Warlocks and Mages can use this spell. Apparently, a high-level Bard can do this too if they wanted to
But you do need the special component, and I'm sure the DM would've said you could make the depiction/statuette as a downtime activity with just a little gold.
This spell doesn’t have a clear size limit. It just says “small demiplane” Normally “small” means half the size of a human. But clearly a labyrinth is larger than that. What is small in relation to?
probably just meaning that they are transported to a demiplane that exists outside of the material plane and such, and "small" as in it isn't very large. (A small tower or a labyrinth for instance). It doesn't mean it's small in relation to anything in the material plane, it's just a small area that the victim is imprisoned. (Think Rapunzel trapped in the tower).
Would killing the caster end the imprisonment? I'm guessing not
So question, can you use this on yourself? I could see the uses, shrink yourself into a gemstone and have it fall through something to enter a locked room or escape, use itt to survive a giant fall if you have no other spells available. Given no materials are consumed only thing you will lose is a spell slot and could be worth it if used right.
Also will you be able to take a long or short rest while trapped? If your trapped somewhere you could use it to gain back spell slots if possible
duration, till dispelled and not a concentration spell. and its not listed as an option under the ending the spell section so i would say no, killing the caster after this has been cast wouldn't work.
Killing or capturing the caster should still become top priority if this gets cast, if then can teleport away with the spell component its going to absolute hell to try and free the target.
you could? im seeing better options available but, feather fall, teleport, plane shift, fly. you can upcast anything on your list with the same slot and not deal with the hassle of not monkeys paw'ing yourself into a prison and hoping you got the woridng right to fufill the escape conditions.
Will the target be immune to this forever if they succeed on saving?
The spell doesn't clarify. It says the target is immune if you try to cast it again.
Does this mean that someone else can cast it, so that the target can try to make the save again? or does it mean the target is immune to it no matter who casts it there after?
It seems to me like some could interfere with targeting; what order would you use them in?
As "you" is specified, I take it to mean that for any single target, all casters get a single fail each; if Alice fails, Bob can still try.
Anybody have any cool ideas for further versions of Imprisonment and what components would be befitting for said forms?
what is the dc for the save
