You step into a stone object or surface large enough to fully contain your body, melding yourself and all the equipment you carry with the stone for the duration. Using your movement, you step into the stone at a point you can touch. Nothing of your presence remains visible or otherwise detectable by nonmagical senses.
While merged with the stone, you can't see what occurs outside it, and any Wisdom (Perception) checks you make to hear sounds outside it are made with disadvantage. You remain aware of the passage of time and can cast spells on yourself while merged in the stone. You can use your movement to leave the stone where you entered it, which ends the spell. You otherwise can't move.
Minor physical damage to the stone doesn't harm you, but its partial destruction or a change in its shape (to the extent that you no longer fit within it) expels you and deals 6d6 bludgeoning damage to you. The stone's complete destruction (or transmutation into a different substance) expels you and deals 50 bludgeoning damage to you. If expelled, you fall prone in an unoccupied space closest to where you first entered.
good for long rest in hostile area
This spell states you can't see what's going on outside the stone, but you can cast spells on yourself. If you had a familiar positioned outside, would you be able see through their eyes, or is all sight gone?
Earth Genasi should have this instead of Pass without Trace.
BRB, petitioning DM.
Almost said this wasn’t really useful until I saw the comments.
YES! Pass without a trace makes no sense, especially with the trait being called "merge with stone"
Okay, Earth Elemental + Meld into stone + familiar, is it viable?
So I'd say yes. You can't see outside, but the familiar can. You borrow its vision which isn't encased in stone.
I fail to see any practical combat scenario's with this though, as you have to use your action to see and can only use a bonus action to cast something, on yourself.
Outside of combat I suppose it could be used for hiding or infiltration. Enter a place open to the public before closing and have the spider familiar scout for when its safe to come out.
...It doesn't say that you can breathe in there.
if you really want to be nitpicky, majik.
The description says you can cast spells on yourself, but it also says you can't move. Does this mean you can't cast spells requiring a somantic component?
When a condition, spell, etc. states that you "can't move", it typically means you "can't use your movement speed"; so you can gesticulate as necessary for spellcasting, but can't walk anywhere within the stone.
That makes perfect sense. I was just reading it too literally.
It states you cannot tell the passage of time
It states that "you remain aware" and so can tell the passage of time. You must have misread that.
It states the exact opposite, actually.
Lol I'm gonna make a Dao Genie Warlock who uses Stone Shape to make statues of themselves, and then casts Meld into Stone and just sleeps in their own statue.
Can you have Spirit Guardians up and hurting people, while hidden by this spell?
yes
i'd go earthen grasp, to keep it level 2
The description is worded like you cast it on yourself, but the range is touch. Is it possible to cast this on an ally? Moreover, can you cast it as a ritual on one ally after the other until the entire party is sleeping inside the walls of a hostile dungeon?
