Eight multicolored rays of light flash from your hand. Each ray is a different color and has a different power and purpose. Each creature in a 60-foot cone must make a Dexterity saving throw. For each target, roll a d8 to determine which color ray affects it.
- Red. The target takes 10d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Orange. The target takes 10d6 acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Yellow. The target takes 10d6 lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Green. The target takes 10d6 poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Blue. The target takes 10d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
- Indigo. On a failed save, the target is restrained. It must then make a Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If it successfully saves three times, the spell ends. If it fails its save three times, it permanently turns to stone and is subjected to the petrified condition. The successes and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track of both until the target collects three of a kind.
- Violet. On a failed save, the target is blinded. It must then make a Wisdom saving throw at the start of your next turn. A successful save ends the blindness. If it fails that save, the creature is transported to another plane of existence of the GM's choosing and is no longer blinded. (Typically, a creature that is on a plane that isn't its home plane is banished home, while other creatures are usually cast into the Astral or Ethereal planes.)
- Special. The target is struck by two rays. Roll twice more, rerolling any 8.

Posted Sep 30, 2019How would this spell play out if I had only one big target (ex. a Great Wyrm Red Dragon)? Would it still only get hit with one beam of light (possibly the red one)? Or would it get hit with all of them? Otherwise this spell would mostly just be good against mobs

Posted Oct 14, 2019At most a creature caught by the effect of this spell can only be effected by two different beams. As you said, it works best against a mob of creatures.

Posted May 1, 2020Can someone explain one thing to me? I says it hits any creatures in a 60 foot cone that fail a saving throw, but also that there are only eight rays. Does that mean there is a limit to the amount of creatures that can be hit?

Posted May 12, 2020I once had the BBEG cast this on a character. The character had low health and was hit by the blue ray and died. A sorcerer was blinded at the time by a blindness/deafness, so he couldn't see that there were eight rays and he thought the spell only dealt cold damage. He was immune to cold damage for some reason or another, and he thought it was hilarious to offer himself up to be hit by the spell. The BBEG cast the spell again and the sorcerer was turned to stone.

Posted May 14, 2020All the lights shoot out of the casters hand in a 60 foot cone. If there are 10 enemies that all fail their save each would roll a d8 to figure out which effect effects them. If they all get red then they all get red.

Posted Oct 3, 2020For anyone wondering, let me explain how I interoperate it. Each creature in the 60 ft cone must make a DEX save, if a creature fails you roll a 8d to determine which ray effects them. 1 beam can effect multiple creatures, so there can be 3 creatures who takes fire damage as an example.
If it's one one creature in that cone who fails, you roll only one effect.

Posted Dec 10, 2020My all-time favorite spell--even if it is a bit underpowered now. But, and this is nitpicky, can we please get Wizards to correct the first word of the description? It's not eight rays; it's seven w/ a d8, an 8 being two rays. Again, super nitpicky, but it always has bothered me just a little bit. Prismatic spray has always had seven rays, ROYGBIV.

Posted Sep 7, 2021This is totally incorrect though. All creatures in the area are affected by a beam regardless of whether they save or not. The only difference if they save is they take half damage if they're hit by beams 1-5 and they negate the effects of 6&7.
