An invisible barrier of magical force appears and protects you. Until the start of your next turn, you have a +5 bonus to AC, including against the triggering attack, and you take no damage from magic missile.
* - which you take when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell
Love this spell :)
Goblinpede will prevail
i think it means that if a attack roll against you is successful then you use this spell to raise your armorclass because it says "included in the triggering attack" meaning it would help defend from that attack as well
I believe that this is so you can cast it at a higher level. say if you are out of Level 1 spells but you have a level 2. this would still give you the same effect as a level 1 shield but take a level 2 spell slot. kind of a desperate move but it can be done. if you don't put it in level 2 or level 3, etc. then you could only use it as a level 1 spell. so, if you are out of level 1 spell slots you wouldn't be able to use it. at least that is how I see it. I could be wrong.
You can always cast a spell using a spell slot of a higher level spell slot than the spell's level. It's just that some spells (like this one) don't behave any differently when you do that.
Also, ‘until your next turn’ would presumably protect you for the round. Good overall protection or if in a health pinch.
All good d6 hit die casters always have this clutch spell prepared
does this stack with a normal shield
Yes, it stacks with basically anything. However, you need at least 1 empty hand available to cast the spell.
Casting Gesure is:
Kozakiewicz's Gesture
If you cast a spell as a Bonus Action on your turn (like Misty Step), then the only other spell you can cast as your Action on that turn must be a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action. This is written plainly in the Player’s Handbook, page 202, under the Bonus Action section.
You cannot cast two leveled spells on your own turn — meaning you can’t cast Misty Step (Bonus Action, Level 2) and then Magic Missile (Action, Level 1) on the same turn. You would have to cast a cantrip like Fire Bolt for your Action instead.
However, Reactions are different. A Reaction spell, like Shield or Counterspell, happens outside your turn. The Bonus Action/Action spell restriction does not apply to Reactions. You can absolutely cast a Bonus Action spell, then a cantrip as your Action, and still cast a Reaction spell later in that same round if the situation triggers it.
