Lightning
Lightning springs from your hand to deliver a shock to a creature you try to touch. Make a melee spell attack against the target. You have advantage on the attack roll if the target is wearing armor made of metal. On a hit, the target takes 1d8 lightning damage, and it can't take reactions until the start of its next turn.
The spell's damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).

Posted Apr 13, 2021No. Check the spell description. "Lightning springs from your hand to deliver a shock to a creature you try to touch."

Posted Jul 11, 2021If I already have "alter self" running and have chosen the natural weapon option to add talons to my hands, does this mean that I gain the +1 bonus to hit if I try to touch a target for "shocking grasp"? I see no reason why not.
Furthermore if I hit do I inflict both the damage from the talons and the shocking grasp as it is all just one action?

Posted Dec 3, 2021Would you need to roll to hit an enemy if you were already touching them? (i.e. a grapple or an unsuspecting enemy you're holding hands with or something)

Posted Dec 3, 2021I would personally think not since attacking with talons is more of a slashing attack, while shocking grasp is more of a grab. The spell doesn't necessarily specify the need to grab the enemy, however, it's more so my own interpretation of the name, so if you see it as otherwise then I suppose it could work. In almost any case, the DM has the last say. If you're trying to maximize damage output and your table is fine with that, there hopefully shouldn't be too big an issue in allowing it. Just keep in mind that the DM may also choose to scale new enemies in relation to that damage output.

Posted Dec 4, 2021Yes, because the spell has Somatic components, which I assume means you have to make some sort of hand signal or gesture to activate the spell with that (free) hand.
RAW also says yes.

Spellcasting gestures might include a forceful gesticulation or an intricate set of gestures. If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.

Posted Apr 30, 2022Magic Initiate, although your casting stat for those will be INT, not WIS, so unless you roll really well on stats it might not be worth it since Tempest Clerics already want good STR, CON, and WIS scores.

Posted Jul 4, 2022Has extremely great usability with "Find familiar". Was able to save a fellow group member once by shocking the enemy in front of him, so he could retreat without granting an attack of opportunity.
Like it :-)

Posted Sep 25, 2022Flavor-wise, you absolutely can! Mechanically, that doesn't change anything. The spell would still require an empty hand (or the War Caster feat), use your Spell Attack modifier, only do its own damage at Touch range, and expose your hand to on-contact effects (such as a Black Pudding's or Fire Elemental's), etc.. The weapon would not factor in at all, but if you want to say "I charge my sword with electricity as I cast Shocking Grasp!", you go for it.

Posted Sep 25, 2022No. You aren't attacking with the talons when you cast Shocking Grasp (no matter how you flavor it). You are doing a Spell Attack, not an Unarmed Strike; neither of the Alter Self: Natural Weapons effects apply.
