For the duration, no sound can be created within or pass through a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point you choose within range. Any creature or object entirely inside the sphere is immune to thunder damage, and creatures are deafened while entirely inside it. Casting a spell that includes a verbal component is impossible there.

This is actually a strong spell, and if a rogue subclass gets ahold of this....oh boy
Note the tiny book icon with an R on it. It's under Casting Time.
Am I crazy or did you used to be able, in previous editions, to cast this on an object like a dagger and therefore have it move like the spell darkness. The net descriptions wording seems to suggest you can no longer use it this way
@Barjack521 I believe that was Cone of Silence which is not in 5th edition.
It says a point you choose. So at my table that is still a viable use. Just watch out the sphere doesnt suddenly make the guards go dead, kinda gives it away. LOL
am i to understand that if a wizard finds a scroll of silence i can not add it to my spellbook if i spend the time and money?
Shouldn't this be available with the Ritual Caster feat for clerics and bards?
Picture this, a level 7 gunslinger (3rd level rogue) with a repeating shot musket, doesn't need to reload... Put them 100 feet out from the enemy with sneak boosting equipment and a ring or wand that can cast the silence spell, a gun that would normally be heard easily by any enemy close enough to shoot... Completely silent, spend grit to do violent shot and add more die to roll for damage... More and more d12's
@Josefwho02 are you talking about Matthew Mercer's gunslinger archetype?
Yup
Something similar happens in the Glass Cannon Podcast. There's a Pathfinder 1e Gunslinger/Inquisitor who casts silence to remain stealthy as they infiltrate camp run by giants.
Such a spell can be cast following the normal rules for spellcasting, or the spell can be cast as a ritual. The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes longer to cast than normal. It also doesn't expend a spell slot, which means the ritual version of a spell can't be cast at a higher level.
Is it possible to cast Silence on the head of a beast to prevent it roar for 10 minutes?
I can't wait to cast it with my ranger gloom stalker silent and invisible in darkness
It would prevent it roaring for as long as it stayed in that 20ft radius, the radius stays where it was cast and doesn't move from that point
well if a rogue took the ritual caster feat they could learn to cast this spell as a ritual no matter the subclass
it is not on the wizard spell list, so by raw a wizard would not even be able to cast it off the scroll.
Interesting that rangers get this but not druids.
Druids do get it, but only with the Circle of the Land (Desert) subclass.
