Choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn’t being worn or carried. The object flies in a straight line up to 90 feet in a direction you choose before falling to the ground, stopping early if it impacts against a solid surface. If the object would strike a creature, that creature must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the object strikes the target and stops moving. When the object strikes something, the object and what it strikes each take 3d8 bludgeoning damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the maximum weight of objects that you can target with this spell increases by 5 pounds, and the damage increases by 1d8, for each slot level above 1st.
Catapult doesn't seem to be in any of the Spell Lists in the Unearthed Arcana Playtest (One D&D) materials. Has it been removed?
yes isr
Would this work on a moving object?
Example: a stone giant throws a rock that is 5lbs. Can I use the spell to throw it back at the stonegiant while it's in mid flight, if I have a ready action, or held action?
A return to sender if you will.
My favorite things to use this spell on are as follows
1.Human skull.
2.Human head at 2nd level+.
3.A small animal, especially hilarious if used to throw a bird like a duck or seagull at someone while it's mid flight .
4.The McGuffin/artifact a bad guy is using for some big bad ritual.
5.If used when Readying an action, the material components of a spellcasters spell as soon as they pull them out.
6.An empty gun or magazine.
7.A rock with a with Glyph of Warding on it,Catapult stowed inside, and a trigger of the rock hitting an enemy.
8.Finally,as a NINTH LEVEL SPELL,for 11d8 damage, you can THROW A LIVE GNOME AT SOMEONE,so long as they're naked or wearing light clothes.
Continued:
9.A pair of bolos,or a net,or even, a bear trap.
10.The house or furniture of tiny creature like pixies.
11.If you Ready an action to use Catapult as a reaction, you can launch spell projectiles back at their casters,so long as its solid enough.(ie Magic Missile or 2nd Catapult.)
12.The rules don't require that you launch an object away from you,so,hypothetically, you can smack someone it the back of the head while they are facing you directly, like during the BBEG's monologue.
13.Throw a bomb.
Would a heart be considered an object that is worn or carried?
Probably, but if are fighting certain undead and decided to rip out their heart, you could kill them with it.
using Pitons and crowbars this makes a good railgun spell at early levels, I thought it was OP originally till I remembered about guiding bolt.
"oh its just worse chromatic orb"
Use plasmoid. Wooden spiked ball. 1inch wide hole. Get inside. "But wait, the entire plasmoid's not gonna fit!" pseudopod. Catapult. Have the pseudopod dislodge the ball, cast teleport and turn the enemy into a meat puppet because of the hole you just made
But what if you multi class with artificer and make ball bearing bags with boom charges after they hit object also it states up to 5 pounds so what if you had five 1 pound boom bags and used catapult to launch them skyward and only boom once landing on or near target with max velocity coming downward plus gravitational pull if another player has gravity affect
Can you do it on yourself?
No, because the spell says "choose one object weighing 1 to 5 pounds within range that isn’t being worn or carried." You're not an object and I'm sure you weigh more than 5 pounds.
You can technically throw a human heart
i throw a knife and killed someone i love this spell
Not one that's actively in a living human, but one that's just lying around, sure.
THis were wolf is good as Dead Mwahahahahahahahhahahahhahahah
ITs going Down
as worded it sound like if it miss the first person (the pass the save) the next needs to made a save
The spell states :
flies in a straight line up to 90 feet in a direction you choose before falling to the ground,
So as written as soon as it hits the 90ft height it would fall.
Assuming that was not in the spell and that the object has a starting velocity of 10mph (found from distance traveled and 6 sec round) using real world physics the Kinetic Energy of a balletic object is equal to it Potential Energy the simples (and most generous) form of the equation is KE = 1/2 * (mass) * (velocity) *(velocity) = KP = (mass) *(height) *(gravity) assuming earth gravity you would get about 3 ft if you solve for height. So either catapult wouldn't lift the object the 90 feet or you would get an additional 3ft which wouldn't change fall damage.
Your damage is an impressive 3d8 plus an additional d8 for each spell slot level above 1st. The cast time is one action, the range is a interestingly worded 60 feet. The duration is instantaneous, the saving throw is dexterity, the components are just somatic. Meaning you just have to be able to gesture with one of those hands to make this effect possible. Also read this dnd 5e catapult magic damage.
The school is transmutation and the damage type is bludgeoning, although i feel like you the damage type depends on what it is you’re using but that something to your DM to discuss not for me to deal with. Do you want to know exactly how does the catapult work in d&D? in a deeper explanation.
I really want this spell to be on the warlock spell list!
