You create a shard of ice and fling it at one creature within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 piercing damage. Hit or miss, the shard then explodes. The target and each creature within 5 feet of it must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 cold damage.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the cold damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.

This was actually pretty helpful thanks! I homebrewed some Christmas elves for a Christmas Campaign and wanted to give them something just in case my players try to recruit them which they probably would (and did) so I didn't want them to be completely useless in battle without any prep time
They better had been in the shape of candy canes!
I liek dis spell
thats an amazing idea
EE EEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It is not in the players handbook is it
No. It's in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
This is probly one of my, if not most favorite 1st level spell
That waterbender style is strong with this...
Add "Watery Sphere", "Tidal Wave", and "Cone of Cold" for the true experience.

BEST SPELL EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you hit a target with Ice Shard, it seems a bit of a stretch to think it can take NO damage by making a dex save. It should at least take half even if the others in the vicinity are able to dodge.
I feel like Wizards and spellcasters in general got nerfed in 5E compared to older versions (I last played 2nd Edition). So many limitations.

This is a pretty good spell, for 1st level
Also no. If you look under the “Available for” section you’ll see that it’s in the elemental evil player’s companion.
This spell appears in both Zanathar's Guide to Everything and EE Player's Companion.
Hope that helps.
On my character sheet, there is no quick die roll button, nor an indication of what the damage die are for the resulting explosion. The damage from the initial projectile is an easy click and while I can remember that it's just an added D6 for each level, I would love for it to be cleaner on the interface instead of having to check for it. Is there a way to customize this or am I just being thick in the head?
Of you used holy water as the component would the ice knife do extra damage against undead?
I am trying the custom actions (other tab) to create an "attack" called Ice Knife Explosion (2d6 cold) and another one called Ice Knife Explosion Level Up (1d6) so I can roll the knife explosion first and then for each level just trigger the level up attack action.
Labelling it an attack makes it appear at the bottom of the attack list so is pretty handily available.
