You summon snaking roots that erupt from the earth and enact nature’s wrath. As the roots spread they tear up the ground, making it difficult terrain. Each creature within a 20-foot radius centered on a point you choose must make a Dexterity saving throw. A creature takes 7d12 bludgeoning damage and becomes restrained on a failed save, or takes half as much damage on a success. A restrained creature can attempt a Strength saving throw at the end of its turn, ending the effect on a success. A nonmagical object that isn’t being worn or carried takes double damage if it’s in the spell’s range.
When casting the spell, you can choose to have the roots shoot up into the air instead of spreading laterally. If you do so, the radius of the spell is reduced to 10 feet and its vertical reach is increased to 40 feet. Any flying creatures within the area of the spell’s effect that fail the saving throw are forced to the ground and are restrained (but do not suffer any falling damage).
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 8th level or higher, increase the bludgeoning damage dealt by the spell by 2d12 for every slot level above 7th.
