Base Class: Fighter

Mounted Archers are highly specialized combatants that engage their foes at range from atop their loyal steeds.

While many Mounted Archers learned the art while in military service, just as many are skilled hunters that needed speed to take down their prey. No matter their origin the skills they have learned are the same; to loose an arrow with deadly precision even while riding at a full gallop. Most commonly riders will use specially crafted short-bows so that they can fire from an position atop their mounts. Some, however, choose to use longbows or even crossbows for the added power such weapons can bring to bear in combat or on the hunt.

Bonus Proficiency

When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: Animal HandlingHistoryInsightPerformance, or Persuasion. Alternatively, you learn one language of your choice.

Born to the Saddle

Starting at 3rd level, your mastery as a rider becomes apparent. You have advantage on saving throws made to avoid falling off your mount. If you fall off your mount and descend no more than 10 feet, you can land on your feet if you’re not incapacitated.

Finally, mounting or dismounting a creature costs you only 5 feet of movement, rather than half your speed.

Blur of Motion

Starting at level 3, while mounted if you move at least the full speed of your mount on a turn enemy ranged attacks against you are made at Disadvantage. This feature does not work while the character is wearing Heavy Armor, or the mount wearing Heavy Barding.

Saddle Acrobatics

Starting at level 7, as long as the character is not wearing Heavy Armor they may use a Bonus Action on their turn to gain +3 to their AC until the start of their next turn. You may do this a number of times a day equal to your Constitution Modifier (minimum of 1) and regain all expended uses after a Long Rest. This does not effect attacks targeting your mount targeting your mount.

Out of the Way

Starting at 10th level you have learned how to get away from opponents trying to catch you in melee. When a creature moves to within 5 feet of this character you may use a reaction to make a ranged attack against that creature. This attack does not provoke an attack of opportunity like it normally would. If the attack hits the creature’s movement speed is reduced to 0 and this character may move 5 feet directly away from the creature, this movement does not provoke Attacks of opportunity.

Charged Shot

Starting at 15th level you can use your mounts momentum to make your ranged attacks more effective. After moving 20ft in a straight line directly toward a creature your first ranged attack against that creature gains an additional 1d8 to the damage roll. This feature may only be used once on each of your turns.

Point Blank Counter

Starting at 18th level you respond to attacks against you with deadly precision. In combat you get a special reaction you can use once on every creatures turn, except your own, and only be used when a creature misses a melee attack against you to make a single ranged attack against that creature. This attack does not provoke attacks of opportunity for attacking with a ranged weapon while in melee range of a hostile creature.
