Base Class: Monk
Channeling elemental abilities, monks of the Way of the Avalanche embody both the stillness of frozen mountain passes and the violence of rockslides and fierce snow storms.
One with the Mountain
3rd Level Way of the Avalanche feature
Upon choosing this monastic tradition at third level, your familiarity with the frigid and unforgiving nature of mountainous terrain grants you resistance to cold damage.
You also gain proficiency in the Survival skill if you don’t already have it and can move across difficult terrain created by ice or snow without spending extra movement.
Blizzard Stance
3rd Level Way of the Avalanche feature
Whenever you use your Patient Defense ki feature, you may surround yourself with a swirling mass of ice and snow that extends 5 feet in every direction until the start of your next turn.
The area is lightly obscured and any creature that enters the area, or begins its turn there, takes cold damage equal to your Wisdom modifier.
In addition, until the end of your next turn, you can change the damage type of any attack you make with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon to cold.
Avatar of Ice and Stone
6th Level Way of the Avalanche feature
As an action, you can channel the elemental strength of frozen mountain peaks, transforming yourself into the very embodiment of ice and stone. While in this state, you gain 4 temporary hit points for each level you have in this class. While this feature is active, you gain the following benefits:
- The damage dealt by your Blizzard Stance feature is doubled, and its reach extends to 10 feet.
- Your unarmed strikes deal an extra 1d6 cold damage to any target they hit.
- As an action, you can create a 15-foot cone of freezing air and stone extending from your clenched fist. Each creature in the cone must make a Constitution saving throw against your ki save DC. A creature takes cold damage equal to two rolls of your Martial Arts die and has disadvantage on its next attack roll on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
These benefits last for 10 minutes or until you lose all these temporary hit points. Once you transform in this way, you can’t do so again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend 3 ki points to transform again.
Calm of the Glacier
11th Level Way of the Avalanche feature
As an action you can spend 2 ki points to cast Silence, centred on yourself, without providing material components. When you do, the ground within the area of effect is slick with ice and snow, becoming difficult terrain for the spell’s duration.
Mountain’s Fury
17th Level Way of the Avalanche feature
As an action, you can spend 4 ki points to increase your speed by 10 feet until the end of your next turn.
During that time, your movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks and when you move within 5 feet of any other creature, you may target the creature with an avalanche of blows. Each creature you target must make a Dexterity saving throw against your ki save DC, taking cold damage equal to three rolls of your Martial Arts die and falling prone on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. A creature can only be targeted by this ability once per turn.
At the end of your next turn, you suffer one point of exhaustion as a result of the physical exertion.
