Base Class: Monk
The Way of the Broken Weapon monastery was founded by Master Tarvos Aelewyn in the Graypeak Mountains north of Llorkh in Faerun. Little is known of Master Tarvos’ youth other than he has survived many strange encounters and has had such odd luck with “normal” weapons that he has spent most of his life perfecting the use of whatever was laying around at the time of need - improvised weapons. The relic known as Tarvos’ Star (the broken head of a morning star retrieved decades ago from a thieving bugbear) is still being used as a training item in the school.
Monks who make the pilgrimage to train with Master Tarvos come away from the school ready and willing to gain experience in any situation that will test their skill of using the surrounding environment. Improvised weapons are everywhere, and a Way of the Broken Weapon monk is perfectly at home using anything laying around to defend themselves and others.
Practitioners of the Way of the Broken Weapon typically refuse to carry crafted weapons preferring to test their skill by utilizing their surroundings when the need arises. You may discover one of this path roaming far and wide with light clothing and a well-worn backpack stuffed with what most would consider junk.
Improvised Weaponry Specialist
At 3rd level, your practice with random objects has given you proficiency with improvised weapons. Whenever you are using an improvised weapon for a melee or ranged attack (any improvised weapon used in this way has a range of 20/60), you can use your choice of Strength or Dexterity modifiers plus your proficiency bonus for attack and damage rolls with improvised weapons.
Furthermore, you can use your current level martial arts dice when rolling damage for improvised weapons attacks.
Breaking Weapons
At 6th level, your attacks with improvised weapons count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to non-magical attacks and damage.
You have learned how to channel your Ki to destroy any intact weapon (improvised weapons do not apply) that you are wielding to inflict extra damage. You do not need to be proficient with the weapon you are attempting to break. After making a successful attack roll, you can spend 1 Ki point to destroy the weapon upon impact with your enemy for a chance to knock that enemy prone. The enemy can make a Strength saving throw against your standard Ki saving throw DC (Ki save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier).
If the enemy succeeds in the saving throw, the weapon is destroyed and normal damage applies.
If the enemy fails the saving throw, the weapon is destroyed, one current level martial arts damage roll is added to the normal weapon damage, and the enemy is knocked prone.
Magical weapons cannot be affected by this ability.
Ranged improvisation
At 11th level, the range of any thrown improvised weapons increases to 30/120 and you can spend 1 Ki to re-roll one missed attack once per turn.
Additionally, you may spend any number of remaining Ki points to modify your next attack and damage roll (spending Ki points in this way must be declared before rolling for the attack). Example: if you have 5 remaining Ki points, you may add up to and including 5 to the next attack and damage rolls.
Breaking the enemy
At 17th level, when an enemy successfully hits you with a melee or ranged attack, you may spend 10 Ki points in an attempt to destroy the weapon that struck you and avoid damage for this one attack. The DC for this counterattack is the amount of damage taken by the enemy’s single attack during the current turn versus your roll of 1d20 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier (this ability may be used during attacks of opportunity). If the counterattack fails, your Ki points are not spent. If the weapon is a +1, then your target DC is doubled. If the weapon is a +2, then your target DC is tripled. For an ordinary to +2 weapon, a critical 20 automatically succeeds in destroying the weapon. A +3 or higher magical weapon cannot be affected by this ability.
