Fighter
Base Class: Fighter

A Dance of Blades fighter is one who looks to enhance their combat ability with magic. Unlike a regular spellcaster however, they use magic to telepathically control their weapons without even needing to lay a finger on them. Using various fighting styles called dances that can only work with weapons wielded in such a way, they cut through enemies with grace and elegance. As a Dance of Blades fighter gains more experience they can develop more elegant and lethal dances, as well as expanding the limits of their mind to control even more blades at once.

(This is my first attempt at a homebrew subclass so it might not be perfectly balanced. Admittedly heavily inspired by Irelia from LoL)

Level 3 – Beauty of the Dance

  • You wield multiple one-handed or versatile weapons at once, the total number equal to your proficiency bonus. Each weapon you wield after the first adds an additional 2 damage to your melee attacks. The damage type depends on the initial weapon used (bludgeoning/slashing/piercing)
  • Your melee weapons all gain a range of 10ft
  • Your weapons become magical
  • Magic nullifying effects force the wielder to use the weapons normally

Level 7 – Blade servants

When an enemy makes an attack roll against you and hits, you can make a reaction to block the attack with a number of your weapons. You reduce the damage by an amount that is based on the number of blades used. For each blade you use to block with, the damage is reduced by 1D6 but that blade then becomes inactive until the end of your next turn. You can use this ability a number of times equal to your fighter level and it resets its uses on a long rest. An inactive blade does not contribute bonus damage to your attacks and cannot be used to block damage.

Level 10 - Chosen Dance

Choose one of the following dances to use with your fighting:

  • Irascibilis – This dance focuses on aggressive fighting and hitting hard. The damage bonus from each additional blade becomes 3 and your attacks can critically strike on a dice roll of 19 or 20.
  • Talionis – This dance focuses on baiting your opponent's attacks and retaliating when they are exposed. Blade servants blocked damage becomes fixed at 6 and if you reduce an attacks damage to 0 you can immediately attack the enemy with the effectiveness of all your blades, regardless of the fact that some of your blades are inactive.
  • Caterva – You focus on attacking multiple opponents on the battlefield at once. You gain an additional blade to attack with without having to increase your proficiency. In addition, you can choose to replace two of your attacks each turn with a spinning slash that targets every enemy within a 10ft radius of you. Each target makes a dexterity saving throw against your melee attack DC. On a failed save they take 1D6 damage for each blade you wield and half as much if they save.

Level 15 – Elegant Blade

Light footed and nimble, you are an expert at navigating the battlefield. You don't provoke opportunity attacks when leaving the melee range of enemies that you have attacked that turn. Additionally, after killing an enemy, you can immediately use your bonus action to dash to another target within 30ft of you and deal 2 damage to them per active blade you have (3 if your chosen dance is Irascibilis). You can use the dash part of this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus with uses refreshing on a short or long rest.

Level 18 – The Final Performance

You can choose two dances from the level 10 feature ‘chosen dance’ to have active at a time instead of one.
