Base Class: Monk
The Eight Gates provides immense amounts of power, however the drawbacks can can outweigh the costs. (note. all special attacks are considered unarmed) This is the fixed version for balancing power.
Monks under the tutelage the Eight Gates masters often suffer many damages while trying to master their craft, many die during their training, making the masters of this craft few and far apart from everyone. Only those that can prove their training have been able to even learn these legendary techniques.
Starting Gates
At 3rd level, you can open the first 2 gates. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to open a gate, you take an amount of damage based on how many gates you opened this turn. You can only open one gate at a time, unless you use 1 Ki point per extra gate.
Gate #1- The Gate of Awakening: The first gate, once opened, grants the "Forward Flower" attack, when you open this gate, you take 2d4 Psychic Damage.
Forward Flower: Spend 1 Ki point, make a grapple check on your opponent. If your opponent fails, they take 3d8 bludgeoning damage and are stunned and their movement speed is reduced to 0 until the end of their turn.
Gate #2- The Gate of Recovery: When you open this gate, you heal 3d6 points of damage. Once combat ends, you take half amount recovered as damage and lose one hit dice until you take a long rest.
(You can only use one of the gate's special attacks on you turn, unless you activate the Gate of Injury.)
Gates of Balance
At 6th level, you gain two additional gates to open.
Gate #3- The Gate of Health: This gate allows the user to access a second technique similar to the "Forward Flower" but much more potent. Upon activating this gate, you take 2d6 Psychic damage.
Backwards Blade- Spend 2 Ki points to make a grapple check, on a success you can move your opponent up to 10 ft. in any direction from you, they also take 4d6 Bludgeoning Damage and are stunned until your next turn.
Gate #4- The Gate of Injury: This gate when opened grants the user an additional attack and double move speed the turn this gate is opened, they also take 2d6 upon opening this gate. The additional attack can be used for the Forward Flower or Backwards Blade attacks in addition to the first.
(You can only use one of the gate's special attacks on you turn, unless you activate the Gate of Injury.)
Limit-Breaking Gates
Beginning at 11th level, you gain two more potent and dangerous gate awakenings.
Gate #5- The Gate of Shattering: When you open this gate, you take 3d6 Psychic damage, while this gate is opened, rolls from natural 18-20 are considered critical hits. Once combat ends, you take another 2d6 additional Psychic Damage.
Gate #6- The Gate of Heroics: When you open this gate, you take 3d6 Psychic damage, while this gate is opened, you gain resistance to all non-magical forms of damage, and you unarmed attacks now deal an additional 2d4 fire damage. Once combat ends, you take another 3d6 Psychic Damage.
The Final Gates
At 17th level, you gain the full potential of the eight gates with the final two gates of power.
Gate #7- The Gate of Fulfillment: When this gate is activated you take 4d10 Psychic Damage, while this gate is activated, you can perform the "Crested Hawk Punch". You also lose two hit dice until your next long rest.
Crested Hawk Punch- Spend 3 Ki points and make an attack roll. On a hit, you deal 8d10 Bludgeoning Damage and your opponent is now Paralyzed. On a miss, they take half and are not Paralyzed.
Gate #8- The Gate of Death: When you open this gate, take 10d8 Psychic Damage. You can attack four times this turn, and use any special attack as many times as possible this turn, you also gain a +5 to your AC and are resistant to all damage for 5 minutes. Once these effects end, you gain five points of exhaustion and roll 1d20. On a 5 or lower, you break all four limbs and cant use them for one year (or two months w/ Greater Restoration), on a 10-15 you only break 2 limbs, and on a 16-19, you break one limb, and on a 20, you miraculously don't break any limbs.
