Monk
Base Class: Monk

Monks trained in the Way of the Grappler prefer to fight up close and personal. They specialise in the control and submission of small amounts of assailants, with a significant number of them being masters of one on one personal combat. Many monasteries that practise grappling consist of performers or gladiators, while others produce private bodyguards or security personnel. Utilising skilled manoeuvres, these monks can drag two assassins up a tall tower to throw them down, pin an ogre to the ground and strike it repetitively, or even choke out and submit the most elite fighters.

Skilful Grappler

Starting when you choose this tradition at 3rd level, when attempting to grapple another creature, you may instead make a Dexterity (Acrobatics) check instead of a Strength (Athletics) when attempting to shove or grapple another creature. The same applies when a creature wishes to escape from your grapple.

In addition,  your melee attacks against a grappled creature gain advantage on attack rolls.

Improved Grappling Techniques

At 6th level, your training in your fighting style improves your skill in grappling. You gain the following abilities.

  • You can spend 1 ki points to count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift until the start of your next turn.
  • You can spend 1 ki point for your speed to no longer be halved when moving a grappled creature with you until the start of your next turn.
  • You can use restrain a creature with your legs instead of grappling with a free hand. By spending 1 ki point, you can make another grapple check using a bonus action. If you succeed, both you and the creature are restrained. You can only restrain a maximum of one creature this way.

Shielded Self

At 11th level, you learn how to manoeuvre grappled enemies to shield yourself from incoming attacks. When you are hit by an attack roll while grappling a creature, as a reaction you may spend 2 ki points to cause the attack to target the grappled creature instead.

Masterful Submission

At 17th level, you gain the uncanny ability to hold down the most gargantuan of foes. You may grapple any sized creature no matter what size they are.

In addition, you can use the Attack action to make a special melee attack, a choke, by spending 2 ki points. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them. The target must be grappled or restrained by you and must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or become unconscious for an minute. At the end of each of the affected creature’s turns, they can make another constitution saving throw, ending the condition on a success.
