Artificer
Base Class: Artificer

A Wordsmith is master of logic, rhetoric, and, most importantly, words themselves. Unlike most Artificers, Wordsmith's do not imbue their arcane art into technology or instruments of science; Wordsmiths imbue magic into items by writing arcane sigils and words. Wordsmiths can alter the fate of nearby creatures by writing magical words into the air that can overwrite some outcomes. Because of their less visible technological prowess, many Wordsmith's can be mistaken as wizards or sometimes even bards, but do not be mistaken: Wordsmith's are still masters of their craft. Due to their knowledge of the arcane, writing, and scrolls, Wordsmith's are known for having a wider ability to concentrate on their spells and the battlefield.

Tool Proficiency

When you adopt this specialization at 3rd level, you gain proficiency with calligrapher's supplies. If you already have this proficiency, you gain proficiency with one other type of artisan’s tools of your choice.

Wordsmith Spells

Starting at 3rd level, you always have certain spells prepared after you reach particular levels in this class, as shown in the Wordsmith Spells table. These spells count as artificer spells for you, but they don’t count against the number of artificer spells you prepare.

Interjection

Beginning at 3rd level, you harness the power of the written word to affect the world around you by inscribing magical words into the air. These effects are called interjections and you may choose 2 from the interjection options below to learn at 3rd level. You may choose a 3rd interjection at level 6, a 4th at level 9, and a 5th at level 15.  To use an interjection, you must either have calligrapher's supplies in hand or be using the Writing Utensils as a spellcasting focus.

You may use this feature a number equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of 1) and regain all uses with a long rest.

Interjection Options:

Here are all of your interjection options.

Analyze

You can critique and exploit weaknesses with your writing. As a bonus action, you may use an interjection against a creature within 100 feet of you and grant advantage on the first attack roll made against the creature before the start of your next turn.

Bias

Your writing favors some creatures over others. As a bonus action, you may use an interjection to grant you or one creature within 100 feet of you advantage on the next saving throw they make before the start of your next turn.

Counterpoint

You can counter against even the most well-formulated arguments. As a reaction when you or a creature within 30 feet of you is targeted with an attack roll, you may use an interjection to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.

Foreshadowing

You can imply imminent danger with your words. As a bonus action, you may use an interjection to give one creature within 100 feet of you disadvantage on the first saving throw the creature makes before the start of your next turn.

Irony

You can turn other creatures' words against them. As a reaction to when you or a creature within 30 feet of you is affected by a condition effect, you may use an interjection to undo the condition against the original target and automatically redirect the condition towards the creature that caused it. Conditions that creatures are immune to have no effect on them, but this interjection still undoes the initial condition.

Paradox

You can make the impossible possible and the illogical logical. As a reaction to when you or another creature within 30 feet of you rolls a natural 20 or a natural 1, you may use an interjection to reverse it, turning a natural 20 into a natural 1 and vice versa.

Writing Utensil

At level 5, the impact of your writing becomes more potent and focused. Using your calligrapher's supplies, you may inscribe arcane words or glyphs into a small or tiny nonmagical item of your choice, such as a pen, ring, bracelet, wand, etc. This object becomes your Writing Utensil and can be used as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells and interjections.

When you cast a spell using your Writing Utensil as a spellcasting focus, you gain a bonus to the roll equal to your Intelligence modifier. That roll must be a damage roll.

You may create this inscribe an object with this feature at the end of your long rest. You may only have one Writer's Utensil at a time and attempting to create another while the previous still exists deactivates the arcane words.

Bold Interjection

The power of your writing has improved immensely. Your interjections gain the following changes:

  • Interjections reset on a short or long rest
  • An enemy targeted by an interjection must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw against your Artificer spell DC or take 2d6 psychic damage or half as much on a success
  • An ally targeted by an interjection gains 2d6 temporary hit points

In addition, you may now concentrate on 2 different Artificer spells at once (they must be different spells). If your concentration is broken, then the spell you cast first is the one that loses concentration, but the other remains.

True Author

At level 15, you have mastered the magic of writing. You gain the following effects:

  • The damage and temporary healing of your interjections increases to 3d6
  • You gain resistance to psychic damage and are immune to the charmed and frightened conditions
  • You may now concentrate on 3 artificer spells at once, but still must follow the original rules
