Base Class: Wizard
Wizards who specialize in Wraith Magic delve into the deepest secrets of necrotic energies, transcending the boundaries of life and death. Unlike traditional necromancers who merely use the dead as tools, practitioners of Wraith Magic command the very essence of necrotic energy to exert unparalleled control over the undead, manipulating their forms and powers to their will. These wizards have learned to manipulate the essence of death itself, bending it to their purposes and using it to enhance their own abilities.
From an early stage in their studies, Wraith Magic wizards learn to maximize the potential of necrotic spells, channeling necrotic energy with precision and power. Their ability to command undead allows them to dominate these creatures completely, turning them into loyal servants. As their mastery grows, they gain the ability to assume a wraith-like form, becoming resistant to most forms of damage and capable of moving through solid objects. At the height of their power, Wraith Magic wizards can control multiple undead simultaneously and siphon life energy from their enemies to heal themselves.
These wizards are often misunderstood and feared by others, even more so than traditional necromancers. They walk a fine line between life and death, often seeking out ancient and forbidden knowledge to further their mastery. Their deep understanding of necrotic energy makes them both formidable allies and terrifying foes. Their motivations can range from a desire to protect the living from the undead, to seeking power over death itself, or even a personal quest for immortality.
Wraith Reanimation
Starting at 2nd level, you can use an action to target the corpse of a humanoid, beast, or monstrosity within 30 feet of you, reanimating it as an undead version of itself. The reanimated creature retains its original statistics but gains vulnerability to fire and radiant damage and resistance to necrotic and poison damage. The creature obeys your commands for 48 hours, after which it collapses into a lifeless heap and cannot be reanimated again.
The maximum number of corpses you can animate at one time with this feature is equal to your Intelligence modifier + your wizard level. You cannot reanimate a corpse with a challenge rating equal to or greater than your wizard level + your proficiency bonus.
Command Undead
At 6th level, you can exert your will over undead creatures. As an action, you can target a number of undead equal to 1 + your Intelligence modifier within 60 feet that you can see. Each target must make a Wisdom saving throw against your wizard spell save DC. On a failed save, the targets must obey your commands for 48 hours, as if affected by your Wraith Reanimation feature. Undead with a challenge rating greater than your wizard level are immune to this effect.
Greater Wraith Magic
Starting at 10th level, your wraith magic enhances your abilities. Whenever you reanimate a creature with your Wraith Reanimation feature, you gain a +1 bonus to your AC, spell attack rolls, and spell save DC for each creature you control. Additionally, as an action, you can form a magical bond with a creature you have reanimated. Until the creature expires, both you and the creature gain the following benefits:
- You gain resistance to poison and necrotic damage, as well as any damage types the bonded creature has resistance to.
- When you fail a Strength or Constitution check, you can reroll the check using the undead's statistics, taking the higher roll. The undead then has disadvantage on its next Strength or Constitution saving throw, depending on which ability you used.
- As a bonus action, you can enter a magical sleep for one hour, taking control of the creature for 1 hour. During this time, you perceive through the creature’s senses. You can do this once per long rest.
Self Reanimate
Beginning at 14th level, you can shield yourself from death with wraith magic. When you drop to 0 hit points, you don't die. Instead, you begin a self-reanimation process. Roll a d8; the result is the number of minutes the process takes. During this time, you are unconscious and cannot take actions, bonus actions, or reactions. If you take damage while reanimating, you must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the process stops and you start making death saving throws. On a success, the process continues. When the reanimation process finishes, you regain half of your maximum hit points, and any open wounds or severed limbs are completely healed. You can't reanimate yourself more than once in a single day.
