When I created my fighter we were starting at level 3 and I went Barbarian and chose the Barbarian's Greataxe +1 because:
You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. In addition, while you are attuned to this weapon, your hit point maximum increases by 1 for each level you have attained.
The description says I get a +1 whether or not I am attuned but while using the DnD Beyond app for rolling I do not get the +1 unless I have checked off the "attuned" box. The only thing I should be losing is the max HP bonus when not attuned.
Was the weapon not created properly? Should we be able to have bonuses applied independently of being attuned?
That is most definitely a homebrewed magic item as WotC wouldn’t write it using that language. The phrase “for each level you have attained” isn’t Jeremy Crawford’s writing style, he and the WotC team would have used language more like “per character level” instead.

Seems an awful lot like they copied the Berserker's Axe, made a few changes and removed the description of the curse, but forgot the remove the Cursed tag... While the original is from the Basic Rules, that's kinda sloppy.

Sonovagun. They really did use that phrase. Hunh. I’ll be dipped. It’s from the basic rules…. That’s a really, really old item then. They don’t use phrases like that anymore. Now they’re more careful to specify between class level and character level when they write stuff. Shoot. Well, as my mother says, “ya learn something new every day until they throw dirt on ya.”

Currently, DDB doesn't separate magic bonuses that require attunement from those that don't - it's either all or nothing.
Edit: Actually, where are you finding this Barbarian's Greataxe? I don't see it in official magic items; is it homebrew?

Nope, it's real.
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
Hrmm. I did find this homebrew by the name the OP used: https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/2025499-barbarians-greataxe-1

Thanks for the answer. Maybe I'll lose it. I'm sure there are good replacements out there waiting to be stolen/found/bought/conjured.
BTW, you could continue to learn about dirt until you're resurrected.
