Umm... had this thought. A staff of Adornment is a common magic item that can make something of up to 1lb float at it's head (up to three somethings actually). Well, that, and an artillerist can use staffs with their arcane fire arm feature... and well... just a heads up but vials of acid and alchemist fire only weight 1 lb.

This is rather brilliant.
"the object floats an inch from the staff's tip and remains there until it is removed or until the staff is no longer in your possession"
Someone grabs the staff from you while 3 vials of acid float atop it and suddenly has to deal with 3 vials of acid falling down onto their head.
Here's something I've been thinking since I read that sidebar: couldn't ANY wizard say his spells look steampunky?
Correct. Its my biggest complaint that Artificers get no specific benefit for how they are supposed to cast their spells, when any class can reflavor spells
I've been thinking about this while keeping with 5E's "keep it simple" philosophy and the only things I could think of are:
Something akin to metamagic, but that's the Sorcerer's perview.
Something that requires all of their spells to have a Material component no matter what, but I can't think of how to implement that because that sounds like a neutral to negative thing.
I know its not what this thread is about but the fix i have decided upon, which was the reason for my complaint is essentially; you can let someone else cast you spell but you cannot cast that spell for the duration This imitates you handing the magic item off to someone else, but then you are obviously lacking that item yourself. I have more defined rules if you are interested
Shield: I have been picturing for Shield having a small box that on hit causes a small tesla like orb to pop out and project the magic shield around you. Bonus being the sounds effects for it being hit and appearing in my head sound exactly the same as the ones from Droidekas.
Light: Literally a just something more similar to a modern day torch.
Feather Fall: Just a load of small boxes that stick to those in range and cause a parachute to burst out of said box.
Any spell can be flavored. We simply need to look at a couple-a-few things: Range for casting, intent of the spell, and your theme. The last item being the most important for flavoring, are you magi-tek, steampunk, renaissance inventor, elfpunk, stitchpunk, etc.
Let’s try some magi-tek flavor:
Shocking grasp:
Range - touch, you’ll want this flavor on your hands or a handheld item. Let’s go with gloves.
Intent - light damage, advantage on metal, no reaction on hit
Flavor - Stun-glove (name doesn’t matter), a leather glove tipped in conductive metal attached to some power supply, perhaps a gem.
Now a renaissance inventor:
Detect magic:
Range - self
Intent - proximity divination
Flavor - Magic dowsing rod
You can see that the possibilities are vast. You can flavor every spell, none, or just those that you use a lot. I’ve flavored every spell on both my alchemist and my battlesmith, once you find your theme it gets a lot easier. Here are a few I’ve done: Feather Fall = Encapsulated Parachute (sticky pills I toss at people that crack open to deploy a parachute), Sanctuary = Intermittent Deaggivator (a tiny annoying strobe light attached to someone), Identify = Magi-chromatograph Mass Spectroanalyzer (a complicated box I lay out), Grease = Grease (why would you flavor this? It’s grease!), Revivify = Defibrillator, ...
I haven't played one yet, but I've been meaning to play an alchemist and had a few ideas for their setup.
Fire Bolt, Acid Arrow, and other projectile roll-to-hit spells - An arm-mounted cannon of sorts that allows for the insertion of vials and canisters. Simply putting in the right combination of canisters and vials will automatically process them into an alchemical projectile for example; Black Powder + Salamander's Skin = Fire Bolt,Mercury + Swamp Water + Tarantula's Venom = Acid Arrow.
I also wanted to a throwing item that would activate and then slowly throw around healing fluids like a lawn sprinkler.

It's ok Ranger, you'll always be cool to me.. Unless druid gets another use for its wild shape charges.

You stole my idea, although for the sake of brevity, I would say I had these vials premixed or otherwise have a pack that's constantly mixing them. Hooray for Alchemists!!
Yea, It would be more efficient, but the idea was based on some anime I used to love back in middle school. The guy had some arm-mounted cannon that would produce different elemental projectiles based on what energy and ammo he put into it.

My favorite spell flavorings for my goblin artillerist, Goggles, have got to be:
Absorb Elements/Shield - It's just an airbag built into her armor Jump - Spring loaded shoes, Inspector Gadget style Sanctuary - A smelly potion that makes an ally reek like a skunk Mage Hand - A octopus like object with a small helicopter controlled by a remote control Faerie Fire - The magic octopus from above deploys a firetruck red dye on the area below it (the red dye is also useful for dying her hair) Grease - Same as above, but... with grease!
Something I've been thinking about lately is that all of these things are still magic, so there is no reason to try and pretend they aren't. we just need the extra focus. So I've started gripping my devices to put the spell slot in them so they can be cast. This also better explains prepared spells. we prep the devices, but then we arm them with a spell slot. Also, I do this with the "Magazine" I put into my cannot. I've explained that I have cylinders with three colors inside, Red, Blue, and white. I put one in to my Cannon, and it grows to it's small size (I keep it and other devices "prepared spells" stored on the back of my shield). If I put a white one in, I have the Force Ballista, Blue is the Protector, and Red is obviously Flame Thrower.
I really like this option. My character concept is a dwarven "RuneSmith", where they are a type of arcane blacksmith. I never wanted him to be a crazy inventor or gadgeteer. I think creating something like a special tool that can do most of these things would be simpler. Maybe tie it into my Arcane Focus item... It will be a few weeks before we play again, so any suggestions?
I made a small rod/multi tool to cast my new cantrip with. The cantrip is Presdigitation. I downloaded an app that makes the Sonic Screwdriver noise. I use it any time I use my multi-tool.

My character is a Alchemist Artificer/Arcane Trickster
Green flame blade- (Still looking for ideas that would match my character)
Mage hand(Invisible)- Your glove can manipulate the gravity that surrounds objects
Shocking grasp- The palm of a glove is sparsely lined with thin metal strands that conduct electricity and shocks the target
Lighting lure- A thin and flexible metal string that can be wrapped around a target. The shocking glove delivers the electricity through the string if the target is close enough
Message- A tiny mechanical bird flies to the targets ear and plays a message
Minor illusion- A small disk like device is thrown and emits a sound or image surrounding it
Absorb elements- The damage type is absorbed into the glove and can be channeled back into the next weapon attack
Catapult- A magnet is thrown on 2 sides of an object. As their attraction grows they snap together, violently pushing the object towards its target
Colour spray- You extend your cloak to the side and bright lights erupt from inside it
Disguise self- microscopic projectors that line your clothes emit an image onto you, changing your appearance
Faerie fire- A small cube(rubix cube) is thrown and when it deploys it spins in place and shines light that seems to stick to its targets
Find familiar- You create a mechanical animal and imbue it with a magical connection to yourself
Healing word- Small darts shoot out of a device on your wrist that inject its target with a healing solution
Ray of sickness- Small darts shoot out of a device on your wrist that inject its target with a poison solution
Tashas Hideous laughter- You throw a small canister that releases laughing gas when it impacts its target
Invisibility- The microscopic projectors that line your clothing project your surroundings onto you making you appear invisible
Cure wonds - tin foil winged meca butter flies come out of your sleeve to shed a blue healing light over wounds.
1st lvl grease spell - you roll out a device on wheels that rolls to your target location that begins dispersing grease, like those fertilizer fans you push for gardens.
1st lvl jump spell - you attach a palm sized anti gravity mechanism to your targets boots, reducing its weight at the best optimal moment, resulting in a higher jump.
I have a sonic screwdriver-like focus, as some of you do. As part of the verbal component, I have to say "Alexa" (the name of the screwdriver), as in "Alexa, cast fire bolt".
I'm also thinking of having an infused crossbow be a focus, with magical ammunition for the spells. Maybe like different dust options for firearms in RWBY.

My idea was based on Mira from KOTOR 2 and her wrist launcher, which launches pre-made poison darts, rockets and grenades.
Duuuuuude I haven't played KOTOR2 in way too long. You just reminded me that she existed, now I gotta look that up.
