I am looking for some help as I am considering multiclassing into fighter.
My PC is a Ravenite (+2 Str +1 Con) Ancestral Guardian Barb. I am really liking this build for tanking and protecting the party, but I want to make sure he stays a major offensive threat on the battlefield.
I've been looking at Samurai. Here's what I'm thinking: Fighter Lvl 1: Sweeping attack (to minimize mob ability to nullify AG benefits); Lvl 2: Gain Action Surge. Lvl 3: Samurai: Fighting Spirit
Help me out here because I need to make sure I'm playing as intended, by Lvl 5 Barb w/Lvl 3 Fighter:
Fighting Spirit Applies to ALL weapon attacks so I get the benefit of Reckless attack without the disadvantages until I burn thru them "As a bonus action on your turn, you can give yourself advantage on weapon attack rolls until the end of the current turn"
Next Turn: Bonus Action Fighting Spirit: Attack(A) + Extra Attack(A)
Next Turn: Bonus Action Fighting Spirit: Attack(A) + Extra Attack(A)
Next Turn: Reckless Attack: Attack(A) + Extra Attack
If I have thought that thru correctly, it means that in a boss fight, my Barb with a standard greataxe could do up to (even if improbable) 81 dmg 1st round, 54 dmg 2nd round, and 54 damage 3rd round all while party is protected from the 1st enemy I hit during my turn (assuming I don't kill them during the turn) without worrying that they're getting advantage on attacks against me. Is that correct?
But I am wondering if Rune Knight Fire Rune and Stone Rune might not work better in tandem to ensure rolling with Advantage. OR using Echo knight to attack with Advantage and then Teleport out of range via the echo.
I like your thought process! Noticed one thing - it's not clear from what you've written, but it seems like you think Action Surge grants you only one attack. In fact, Action Surge gets you a whole new action, which can benefit from Extra Attack.
Secondly, I would definitely consider going with Echo Knight. Not only do you get to strike through your echo, keeping you out of direct melee while still making attacks and activating your Ancestral Guardian, but you also negate some of the costs associated with Reckless Attack - at the very least, melee enemies will have to waste an attack on your Echo or move past it to get to you, provoking an opportunity attack from you through the echo (Sentinel here is a very silly feat, by the way). You can get into some really good positions where you force your enemies to have to Dash to get to you if you move away from your echo at the end of your turn, and they'll want to, since they have disadvantage on attacks against everyone else but advantage against you.
Finally, it's always good to take note of the weaknesses of any build. You've got a great Defender setup here when it comes to enemies that make attacks - and are especially effective against melee-dedicated enemies. However, creatures that primarily force saving throws don't really care about your AG feature. So, when thinking about that burst round at the start of combat, identify the wizard, use your Rage and Fast Movement to get over there and tank any opportunity attacks, and then greataxe him or her (4 times!) to death.
I like what you're doing here! Best of luck with your character and campaign!
Thanks for the help! Yes, I've never played fighter before so that was my misunderstanding of the action surge mechanic since Barbs get an extra attack with the Attack action, this makes sense! So the full action is actually:
4 attack rolls all at advantage with a max potential single round damage of 108, plus 54pts of dmg with the enemy making straight rolls until I'd start using Reckless.
WOW!!
I'm liking it! I really like the idea of being able to use the Fighter type for dealing with AOE casters after threat assessment.
I'll definitely think thru the action sequence for EK & RK. Thanks again!!

Partway through the quest for absolute truth.
