So I have this crazy idea of a barbarian / Paladin multiclass where your main goal is to protect everyone in your party by going Ancestral Guardian barbarian and then multiclassing into Oath of Redemption paladin giving you the ability to make enemies have disadvantage when attacking someone else but you and if they do hit a friend you can still take that damage.
Now it should be noted that I'm not looking for any mid max or optimal build instead just following the concept of a character with minimal magical abilities and who would jump in front of a disintegration ray for a friend.
What do you think? have any other ideas of how this could work?
A bugbear barbarian paladin with a Halberd great weapon master, polearm feat and sentinel great reach and lockdown. All those abilities work together to defend your party. Take 3 levels of fighter and grab cavalier lol
Path of the Ancestral Guardian and Oath of Redemption don't mesh well together because both Spirit Shield and Aura of the Guardian use your reaction and fill similar functions. Instead, I would combine Path of the Ancestral Guardian and Cavalier as was suggested above.

Just wanted to point out that Long Reach only works on your turn.

I think a lot of people rely on the Barbarian's unarmored defense entirely for their AC, but while that gives you plenty of safety even if you're caught out of combat, you can still rely on armor to be a better shield for your allies. Although maxing out DEX and CON would prioritize defense over attack, but it's hard to get all three of STR, DEX, and CON maxed out, when you could easily get DEX up to just a +2, wear some Medium armor and have really high AC.
Alternatively... you could play as a Tortle for the 17 AC right off the bat.

My personal preference is get dex to +2 and use the greater of the available medium armor and unarmored defense. Dex at +2 and Con at +4 match Scale Mail and Breastplate for AC and the improvement in HP is nice for tanking, too. Barbarian's are effective HP tankers when they are being attacked by means that they have resistance against.
However, getting your hands on Adamantine Armor is awesome for barbarians, especially bear totem barbarians.

I would recommend taking Sentinel, to play into your "nobody will get past me" defender style.
