So the Battlemaster Fighter has gotten some hefty boosts to their capabilities recently...”Tasha’s Cauldron” added some powerful Maneuvers to their repertoire...and I’ve been buzzing with character ideas because of all these great additions.
Way back when, I always thought Fighters & Barbarian made great multiclass partners...a small dip into Fighter got you “Second Wind”, “Action Surge”, and a “Fighting Style”...
...while a small dip into Barbarian got you “Rage”, “Relentless Attack”, “Danger Sense”, and even a slight HP boost to smooth out the deal.
My interest now is that a Battlemaster Fighter with a 1-3 level dip into Barbarian can benefit from “Rage” benefits and still use their Maneuvers...that’s always been a huge benefit.
...but I notice a bit of fun when combined with Wild Magic Barbarian, too.
The “Wild Magic” surges, chiefly, give you a fixed benefit when you Rage...and I’m wondering how well this goes with a Battlemaster Fighter.
Seems like a potentially devastating combination...you get one of those amazing “Wild Magic Surges” combined with Fighter maneuvers, and suddenly you are doing so MUCH from turn-to-turn...alternatively, you can save your “Rages” when you run low on Maneuvers, giving your Fighter a back-up style when you’re waiting on short tests.
Nevermind the advantage on your strength-weapon rolls from “Relentless Attacks”, which help your Maneuvers have a better chance of hitting.
How feasible does a build like this sound?
Personally, I’m curious to try this with a gnome...”Tasha’s Cauldron” let’s me switch out the +2 Intelligence with a +2 Strength...and gnomes get advantage on magical Wisdom, Intelligence & Charisma saving throws, shoring up the weakness of the melee classes.
Plus, I can get the “Fade Away” feat...yet another magical “trick” this already tricky build can conjure in a fight.
I also like the appeal of a tiny gnome Battlemaster Fighter kicking ass...then suddenly exploding in a surge of colorful magic. Seems like a very “gnome” thing.
This sounds a lot of fun. I always liked the combination of both classes indeed. My go-to was always to multiclass after Fighter 8 (just to consolidate the 3 ASIs) and when started as Barbarian, after level 5.
One particular combination that I think would be super funny is: Shove, Attack, bonus action grapple attempt (Grappling Strike) and the 8 option of the Wild Magic which causes Lightning to hit somebody and even blind if hit.

The bonus action flexibility is pretty sweet, as is the boost to grappling. : )
