I’m sorry for being slow but what is ASI? with the open hand technique I can topple with a dex save instead of a con save which I think is better for monsters. If you are concerned about focus points and hit points you get uncanny metabolism very soon, it’s a matter of patience, which is a virtue of a monk. Monks are challenging to play, I think because focus points and hit points are a precious resource. Mounting pressure looms over me, when my power tank diminishes. I usually start at 3 level when I get open hand technique. If I can give a creature the prone condition then I adv. to hit and they have disadvantage to hit and it takes half there movement to right them self. I end up mostly using focus points for flurry anyways, so I can dmg and attempt a topple 2x at lower level. I could also dmg and push with a str. Save, the creature has no choice on the save. Then at 4 lvl I get the speedy feat for defensive purposes.

ASI is Ability Score Improvement, which is now a feat in 2024. It was a choice of ASI or a feat (which was an optional rule in 2014) at certain class levels. That hasn’t changed. The post I quoted listed the Epic Boon feat at character level not class level, which is incorrect
The most impactful character development choice as a Monk is which class you multiclass into at Level 2.
Without Weapon Mastery and every other feature that other classes get, a Monk contributes less to the party without spending ki than any other martial when not expending resources. A Monk cannot control and hinder enemies without giving up damage. A Monk's resourceless DPR is below other martials exploiting Nick/Vex and Cleave. A Monk cannot tank in a way that actually protects other party members and discourages attacks against them, and not without sacrificing their DPR. A Monk cannot meaningfully make use of their maneuverability without expending ki, while other classes have features that grant them added mobility with zero cost.
Even a one-level dip makes the Monk so much stronger. It's an unlimited Flurry of Blows, an early Extra Attack, an early fifth attack before Level 10 on a class that gets nothing meaningful offensively except more attacks at higher levels. Add to that Rage, or Second Wind, or Sneak Attack/Expertise, or Spellcasting...that one-level dip gives a Monk more power and versatility than any of their 2024 subclasses.
Yes, a dip for weapon mastery will boost a monk. But I think monks can still keep up just fine unless you are playing at an optimized table. Monks getting to choose two options for unarmed strikes, even if once per turn, would have been nice since they didn’t get WM. But they are better off than they were before.
And I’m not sure what you mean by “A Monk cannot meaningfully make use of their maneuverability without expending ki, while other classes have features that grant them added mobility with zero cost.” Sincethey can use PD and SotW without focus points and their base speed increases as they level. FP only gives a bonus to those maneuvering abilities.
I think WM is a thing now also, but with DnD beyond you can make any lvl character I want or start at 11 lvl, if that happened I wouldn’t sacrifice fleet step for WM. It depends on context. I have had to many encounters where I was on the brink of death and use the mobile feat every turn. My HP whittled down to nothing in a matter of a few rounds not to be alert at a Monk.Monks are good skirmishers pinning down an apponent in the ranks, and escaping with movement, if you can do that to an archer or a wizard that’s good enough. If I am in a Dungeon, with 10 foot corridors then the speedy feat is useful to get around enemies with disadvantages to opportunities attacks, which is dangerous, but pinning that spell caster down could mean the difference between life and death.
multiclassed a monk with a dip in fighter, I feel better about the optimization.

No, it works based on character level otherwise level twenty multi classes wouldn't get feats every 30k experience.
I like Monk\Druid combo, and later on taking fighter dip. But reason is for the utilization in the group as a healer. No one wants to play a cleric. But that’s the only reason.
but monk/fighter monk/ranger works well. otherwise can take mag initiative if you want to spend the asi (bump wisdom at the same time)

No, this is incorrect. It's 100% based on class level. That's part of the price of multi-classing.
EDIT: Here is the relevant text taken from the monk:
Level 4: Ability Score Improvement
You gain the Ability Score Improvement feat (see chapter 5) or another feat of your choice for which you qualify. You gain this feature again at Monk levels 8, 12, and 16.
Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

Epic boons only requires level 19 it doesn't specify classes if they intended to specifically make exclusive to 19+ levels in a class the epic boon feature exists and they would say it requires the epic boon feature.
Epic boons only requires level 19 it doesn't specify classes if they intended to specifically make exclusive to 19+ levels in a class the epic boon feature exists and they would say it requires the epic boon feature.
To be fair, the Ability Score Improvement feat only says 4+ and doesn’t specify class or character level or requires the feature either. But we know it’s class dependent
Ability Score Improvement
General Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+)
Increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. This feat can’t increase an ability score above 20.
Repeatable. You can take this feat more than once.
You literally don't have a chance at a feat before then
This is incorrect; there are lots of ways to get a feat before level 4. Under 2024 rules all characters start with an origin feat at level 1, but even in 2014 rules there was a Human variant that started with a feat at level 1, and some backgrounds from newer sources provided them too.
Right. Because of the level requirement. Before you got ASIs at set class levels. Now, you get Feats at the same class levels and they made Ability Score Improvement a Feat. They put a level limit on it so any character option that gives a feat (such as custom origin from Tasha's) can't give you an ASI feat. I don't have my book handy so I can't check if other feats have level limits.
yes, some feats have a level requirement of at least 4. That's why multiclassing is a serious decision. You are delaying your feat/ASI for something you get from a different class. That's part of the balancing act you have to perform.

If you are responding to me I mentioned the 4+ general feats because some say a Paladin 15/Sorcerer 4 gets an Epic Boon feat because it only lists the requirements of 19+. I say they can’t because it’s based on class level, not character level
And I’m pointing out that the general feats are worded exactly the same.
Does that mean a Paladin 2/Sorcerer 2 can get a general feat? We know they can’t because, just like 2014, it’s tied to class level not character level. And it is listed on the class table and in the class description. Just like Epic Boons. It’s on the class table and in the class description for the class level 19. Unless I’m completely wrong on this and it’s a big change from how 2014 worked.
How it works at level 20+ I’m not sure. I really didn’t read into it since we typically don’t get to that level.
Well, we know DDB is glitchy, allows things that are against the rules and doesn’t allow things that are allowed in the rules. DDB isn’t a good measure of RAW or RAI.
I somewhat agree but you also didn’t address what he was discussing with ranged grapples. The ability to grab someone and hold them without them being within melee distance is a powerful ability, especially when feats like grappler allow you to move them throughout the battlefield.
also keep in mind that (while at lvl 20) you lose out on essentially (unarmored defense) 4 ac and +2 damage modifier.
also, while fighter does seem good, I would argue that ranger dip would be better. Weapon mastery 2x, spells, and namely hunters mark for the multitude of attacks you make as a monk (1d6 x 5 attacks). If you want two weapon fighting style that badly take the Tasha’s fighting styles feat and get the modifier.
