So I was just reading through the PHB thinking about a new character and thought I could make a kobold monk. After doing some more research I realized something at the monk weapons section. It reads
Whatever name you use for a monk weapon, you can use the game statistics provided for the weapon in chapter 5, "Equipment."
Now after I read through this I was like great so I can take any weapon I wish from basicly anywhere what somewhat might resemeble the monk weapon as one with the in game statistics. But can I really? I myself have not played Dungeons and Dragons for really long. So first of all would this be considered homebrew because myself I play Adventures League. Secondly if I would pick the weapon Kurigasama heres a little read from the wikipedia article "The Kurigasama is a traditional Japanese weapon that consists of a Kama a Japanese equivalent of a sickle on a kusari-fundo a type of metal chain (kusari) with a heavy iron weight at the end." I was thinking should I use as the weapon statistics a sicke or some other kind of slashing weapon? OR should I use a bludgeoning weapon because at the end theres the wieght what was also used if you werent in range to hit with the sickle?
I would be really happy if my character could use the weapon because I think it would fit the style of character im looking for so im really eager to get a response! thank you for advance! Wizard out!!
PS: The title was about a QUESTION but i suppose there was a couple more than a one. Also I apologize about the bad grammar english is not my first language.
At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don’t have the two-handed or heavy property.

You will need to reskin an existing monk weapon. Anything other than just using the stats of an existing weapon would require consent with your DM.

Is there a list of existing ones somewhere?

The DMG includes a list of suggested wuxia-themed reflavors of existing weapons (e.g. a longsword could be reflavored as a katana), but the kusarigama is not listed there: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/a-world-of-your-own#WuxiaWeaponNames
Thank you!!! But i dont have the DMG...
The abbreviated version is, "Pick one of the standard D&D weapons and just change the name to whatever you like, as long as your DM is happy with it."
Don't get too hung up on special mechanics for weapons. 🙂
You could, for example, say your Kurigasama uses the stats of any these and I would be fine with that in my games: sickle, flail, scimitar, whip

👍 thank you maybe I just needed to clear my mind a little bit.
Keep in mind that the Sickle is the only one of the four you listed that is actually eligible for being a Monk Weapon.
