One of my players (who will probably find this thread) is playing a Kensei 5 / Cleric of Shaundakul 5 (using a homebrew Travel Domain). He's about to take sixth level in monk and we're talking about him making his Spiritual Weapon as a Kensei Weapon. I'm hesitant, but wondered what other people's thoughts were? It wouldn't change the damage die of Spiritual Weapon, the only main benefit would be getting to use Deft Strike with it unless I'm missing something. He's also keen to eventually get to use Stunning Strike with the Spiritual Weapon as well, and this seemed like a good potential path to train towards that.
None of that is allowed by the rules, but if you're OK with giving them the ability to try to stun an enemy from a distance, that sounds like a fun gimmick for your player. They're still going to be limited by their relatively few ki points and spell slots, only having one bonus action, and the weapon moving only 20 feet at a time, so it's not exactly game-breaking.
By the rules, a kensei weapon is supposed to be a simple or martial weapon (an object), not a spell effect. And Stunning Strike is supposed to only work with melee weapon attacks, not spell attacks.
Well, a spiritual weapon kan do a lot of things that a normal weapon can't, it being a flying thing that you don't need to hold and all. That said, it does take up his bonus action to attack with. I'm on the fence but would probably say no. Too many possibilities for shennanigans with it. If you need a reason then deft strike is something that you as a kensei actually holding your weapon is capable of doing. A spiritual weapon on the other hand is in some ways an extension of your god's powers. Is your god a kensei? ;)
Hey all,

So, any thoughts?
Thanks all!

Thanks both, much appreciated. FYI, his god is Shaundakul, so definitely not a Kensei!
